Tired of FPS's with hats, killstreaks and other bullshit that unfairly gets you killed? In Quake Live, if you get killed it will always be because the other player/team was playing better. It's also completely F2P! Just make an account on http://www.quakelive.com/ and start fragging.

But no seriously more people should play this game because it's amazing. Just moving around feels good. You will get decimated when you first start playing though. And after that. But don't let that get you down, the matchmaking is decent and will try to match you off against people on your own skill level.

I'm still a total scrub, but here are some tips that helped me get started:
- Quake is not just shootan', it's about controlling space. So take the time to learn the maps and keep the following in mind:
--position of powerups
--height advantage
--right weapon for the right range, for example maintain long range if you're using the rail gun
--position of your own and enemy team
- It might be best to play a round or two with bots first, to get a feel for the game and the weapons
- Start out with a gamemode that doesn't start you off with all the weapons, as that might be intimidating at first. I recommend starting off with CTF, picking one weapon (rocket launcher or lighning gun might be the easiest to pick up and get frags with) and try to get good with that
- Spectate a good player to find out how they do it
- Find some friends to play with (hint hint hint)

and then after about seven hours of crying I decided that possibly bots are just broken and then real people murdered me repeatedly and I think I am bad at this.

Nitro, I accepted your invite and I added you dark. GM, just keep trying man, this isn't a game you can just pick up and roll with. Try adjusting your mouse sensitivity (and don't put it too high) and change your keybinds so you can switch weapons while moving without using the scrollwheel. I've rebound movement to ESDF and use the different keys around those for weapons (eg G for rocket, R for railgun etc.)

Yeah, Quake is one of those ancient badass super skill level shooters like Unreal, Tribes and shit

Maybe you're doing something wrong? Idk, spectate a good player and compare that to what you're doing. Remember, what's important is controlling the map, not just shooting.

it's a freaking blast when you get good at it, hang in there. When I was first getting into FPSs, a (very, very skilled) friend tutored me and that helped a lot, so you could have someone do that for you, if you know anyone.

Maybe some basic tips could help.
uhhh a rocket does 100 damage on direct hit, and the damage dealt decreases the farther away rockets are from your target down to 1 damage
lightning deals 6 damage every... uh... I dunno 1/1000 of a second or something? It's insane. Point is, keep your beam focused on them for a little while and their health plummets like nobody's business
and the railgun deals 80 damage.

oh also if you land a perfect shot with every single pellet from the shotgun, it deals 130 damage, but that's really hard to do, especially on dodging opponents, so if the oppurtunity arises, it's my preferred assassination weapon.

if you're in a railgun fight, best thing to do is pretty much hit ADADADADADAD while trying to not let dodging like mad screw up your aim

after a while, you should look up "strafe jumping". that's when the game REALLY gets interesting.

I'd duel you but I'd just get roflstomped, never duel'ed before and I still haven't got much better (lack of practice).

If you can find someone your skill level to duel with it's super fun. Learning the way they play over time and getting better and better against eachother is great.

I've got an IRL friend I've been dueling with and it's been fun but I've been able to get away with making dumb mistakes over and over thanks soley to having better aim than him so that's why I'm looking for more dudes to fight while waiting on his aim to improve

I've been playing a bit of this every day, can't play too much or I'll get too excited. The thrill of a tense match makes my heart pound.

I wish I was better with the railgun, but every time I do land a good rail, my dick gets ROCK. HARD.
