The outcry over the Halos was at least partially reasonable, since it was the first instance of an item that you couldn't get (people do like being able to get all unlockables in a game), it was given to the people that cared less about hats, and there wasn't anything saying that using this specific program is wrong.
The outcry over the Earbuds, however, was just completely ridiculous. Aside from that it was blatantly clear by now that you are completely not expected to be able to have all hats, but it's also a counterbalance to the five or so PC-exclusive items!

People are actually making servers that check your backpack for earbuds and ban you if you have them.

No joke.

People are also trying to figure out how to ban Macs in general.

Seriously, the hate on the earbuds and macs are completely unfounded (and could actually be comparable to that of racism, maybe I'll write my next college research paper on it). If you ask me Valve should just recolor them PANK and give the PANK ones to all the pc players and call the Earbuds "Bratz" that would be great.
Though I do hate the new menu layout.
