Yeah. Link explains things to characters, he just doesn't use words. Also, any time you choose something when prompted, he is speaking.

It's not a final fantasy game; Link doesn't need to have angsty and dramatic dialogue to validate his existence as a character.

I've always thought that he was 'silent' because it would separate the player from the game- the player 'is' Link, so the player can put their own words in Link's mouth.
It'd be like if Red had dialogue in Pokemon, it'd be stupid because it's probably what you would say, and you are Red.

Are you suggesting another Metroid:other m kind of change? except Zelda franchise?
I wasn't particularly fond of the monologues... I'm not too sure i would want Link monologuing AT ALL.

There's a difference with "more voice acting" and "let's make the whole universe of the game fucking dumb".

Look at Super Mario Sunshine, it has more voice acting that the other Mario games out there and it didn't make the game horrible.

This is a bad argument. It's the same one people use for Gordon Freeman. These characters aren't characters. They aren't deep, they aren't interesting, they aren't good, in any way. They're plot devices more than anything. Silent protagonists are fine. Pacman didn't talk, and hey, Pacman was awesome - but if you're arguing that Pacman was an intriguing, singular, wonderous character with hidden depth and mystery, then you're a douche.

I think Link's emotions and development are displayed just fine. Just because he doesn't talk, doesn't mean he's a totally blank slate. Just look at his facial expressions.

He gets more expressive as graphic capabilities improve.

Link is saving the fucking world every couple hundred years, I think that defines his character enough.

Link from the Wind Waker is in my opinion the most well-rounded of the heroes. Just watch the scene where Aryll gets captured by the Helmaroc King or when they're finally reunited in the Forsaken Fortress, only to be separated again.

Yeah, WW Link was the most expressive, and most entertaining to watch in my opinion.

Agreed. His expressions were so comical, and he used them all the time. Have you ever seen that angry face he uses when he's trying to lift a big rock? It's pretty funny.

Twilight Princess Link was expressive too, but he didn't reveal as much as Toon Link--partially because using over-the-top expressions with that game's style would look weird, and maybe because he's supposed to be a more serious person over all.

honestly, WW styled Link is my favorite in this regard, mostly because its not that awkward to watch him deploy emotions than say, OoT Link or TP Link.

What usually happens is that Cartoony graphics = better expressions, because the cartoon style allows for a more over-the-top look without seeming unrealistic.

For example, it would be very weird to see a Marvel-style character wearing a 'jaw-drop' anime expression.
