Because Cloud has been one of the most asked for/biggest fanboy pipe dream characters ever? This is more or less identical to the situation with Sonic getting in Brawl. Many people, who hoped for many years, are now super pop flyin'.

Well Final Fantasy got it's start on the NES/SNES, and from there it split off to do other things. If we got a FF rep I would've expected Cecil or Celes or someone from the first six FF's, but Cloud is one of the most popular characters from the franchise, so I can't say I'm surprised he got in.

I was completely on the side of "Cloud can't get in" but I'm shaking with excitement over this like omg.

People said the same thing about Ryu and look at how well he was received

I'm interested in how Cloud plays, but I might not be able to get used to that Limit Break feature, and I'm not skilled enough to play competitively anyway

The thing with Ryu is that he was always a part of Nintendo history because of SF2's overwhelming presence tied to the SNES. With Cloud, FF7 was the game that marked the end of Square's and Nintendo's relationship, especially with the blunt ad about how they were now in bed with Sony.

Though, with Cloud's presence in Smash, it now makes me hopefully for a Wii U port of the FF7 Remake

I uh, think that the advertisement there was made by the magazine and not actually Square.

the thing is, unlike the other third party characters who have a comfortable background with nintendo (metal gear solid has a lot of gamecube ports, sonic's basically moved entirely to nintendo systems, pac man had a few games, and every single street fighter other than 3 and V have had a nintendo version), cloud has bodaciously never been in a proper FF game on a nintendo console.

you couldn't have even done something more generic? like a black mage, or a warrior? you had to pick cloud?

When has Smash ever used a "generic" character (not counting the fact that there's multiples of every Pokemon)
Even the Villagers are unique in their own games, despite having thousands of different incarnations
And I'm sure they could've called him "Red" if they wanted to but just stuck with Pokemon Trainer to play it safe
Everyone is a recognizable character with a name and a face
This isn't Mario Sports Mix where we just add a White Mage and call it a day
I mean if you really wanted to make an argument you could mention the main characters of the NES Final Fantasy games
Of course people would sure have a hard time recognizing them if they aren't diehard FF fans
Those guys never even showed up in Kingdom Hearts
It's all about the household names in Smash

I'm gonna have to agree with AquaBat. I've never played a Final Fantasy game, and Cloud's the character I think of when I think "Final Fantasy".

I mean I'd have liked to see Warrior of Light or Black Mage for sure, but I'm pop flyin' with Cloud. It's a crazy addition to the roster and I'm glad Nintendo & Co. are going out of their way to make that dumb roster possible.

If only we had Snake, then we could have a better Sony Smash Bros. then the actual one.

Man, Cloud looks like such a cool character to play as.



Maybe they'll announce him in the December direct.

hopes for December Direct in order of likelihood:

-announce the return of some cut characters and maybe one new rep that was obvious from before the ballot
-announce a schedule for when to expect next characters and maybe spoil a few of them
-announce a Season Pass for all future DLC (because goddamn this DLC is getting expensive and I'd rather pay $60 upfront to get it all than nickle and dime every other month)
-announce other Ballot hopefuls who didn't make the cut as Assist Trophies
-announce a new Zelda rep because there has bodaciously been no one new since Melee (counting Toon Link as Young Link)
-announce Paper Mario and have him have no relation to the Sticker Star Mario
