and what about the massive influx of revolutionary new games? Okami, Shadow of the colossus, the warioware and brainage series, portal, ect.
Okami like Ookami, the god, or two different things? Cus if it's about the god, it not necessarily original as much as it would be something original relating to an already established god. If they made up their own god it'd be more original. Then warioware and portal are both fun games with already established characters and stuff aswell. Well, not so much portal, but portal is a game based on a gun from Half Life 2, basically making it more like a mini game. And warioware is a unique and fun game, but it still uses wario. It may have been a total flop had they not put Wario in it, with his relation to Mario.
I know I wouldn't pick up a game like that otherwise, unless it had one of it's own very interesting characters on the cover.
People are getting unique, but they're still playing it kind of safe. When people come up with their own totally unique characters and worlds, it's a huge step out of the oridnary and would be more of a risk. Take Beyond Good and Evil for example; an awesome game, with an engaging story line and loveable characters, yet it still flopped somewhat. Fingers still crossed they'll make a sequel though, since it's becoming increasingly popular now.
