Are you being serious right now, Galaxy Man? Why do you think we have a "Tech help" thread? A "lost and found" thread? I can't believe you'd even say that. Of course people can make a forum topic if they need help with a specific issue! Why couldn't they?
Stop being condescending, Galaxy Man. Who are you to tell someone that their being upset over a problem is ridiculous? "Not a big deal"? To you it isn't, but it can be one to the people it affects.
Medic's said multiple times that he doesn't believe Valve are horrible people out to make gamers miserable, only that them not fixing this issue is annoying him. Don't cling on old posts he made while frustrated to bash on him.
You're not trying to help, you're trying to say "look at how dumb you are!" and you better stop that.

Medic, this thread being "your" thread doesn't mean you have some sort of authority over who can and can't post in it. While you're right in that Galaxy Man shouldn't disregard your problem and call it unimportant, that doesn't mean you can tell him to go away. You may be "entitled to your frustration" but you're not entitled to taking it out on Galaxy Man or other forum members.

Now there are a few possible outcomes:
-You guys play nice and discuss things politely and calmly without trying to call the other an idiot or a meanie
-You guys stop talking to each others if you're unable to be polite and respectful to each others
-You keep arguing like that and the thread gets locked and I give out warnings like it's candy.
Because the third option isn't an actual option at all, I trust you will know what to do.

Now let's move on to discussing Steam's shortcomings and problems, please.

I'm well aware Great Handsome Oppressor, I was just doing my best to remain civil and let him know that since this topic's about what's wrong with Steam as opposed to what's right, his posts were very out-of-place. He didn't seem to understand why, so he continued.

Galaxy Man's negativity aside, my reason for expecting the "immediate" response to my problem stems from a report I filed more than two years ago for the same reason, and the excess of a decade they've had to fix it on their freetime. Let's face it, if they haven't fixed it by now, they're not trying. Its way overdue. I'm not expecting an immediate response just because it's me bitching and moaning, I expect a response because it's taken them ten fucking years to acknowledge the problem!

Listen, stop talking about Galaxy Man. This isn't the goal of this thread, remember? You said so yourself.

I'm also not fond of their launcher. Makes the whole process kind of sluggish. Getting the entire browser retooled a bit wouldn't be so bad.

What is happening in this thread.

Dude, you've got a one-off bug. It'll take a while for them to get to you not because they're lazy but because you're one of millions they could hear from.
But I don't think they'll give you a fix. Certainly not by changing their software, since that could open up a whole new bag of worms for other bugs.

Have you tried just reinstalling it? Something's probably messed up in your install. I'm willing to bet it's what Steam support would have you do, so you may as well do it now.

No, the installer downloads files from the internet.

Wish I'd waited for that answer, because I just "reinstalled" from my L4D disc and screwed myself. I still have a copy of my games cache, but everything else is just fucking gone.

I want Valve to die.

That's your mistake, not Valve's. Quit freaking out.

You obviously have access to the internet, so why can't you just hook up the computer in question and install Steam properly?

I know it's not their fault, and I'll just have to deal! Don't kick the dog. I'm uncertain how to filter internet into my computer through my phone. I've heard it's possible, but it'll have to wait until tomorrow. I'm not in the right state of mind to be looking up stuff like that and carrying it out.

P sure that's not possible, a phone can't act as a modem and doesn't have the right hookups.

But yeah since steam is pretty geared towards online play you might be outta luck until you can get internet again.

If you have a smartphone with a data plan, it's possible to tether its connection to your computer. I've done more than once on my Android.

If the beta version of steam works for you, great, but if you don't have the beta option don't opt in to it. I tried it and on restart, it becomes unresponsive, I'm senting a ticket in now, but I wanted you all to know that the current beta may not work for your computer.

EDIT:

after a while, it just decided to work so there's that
