DR kinda makes me empathize a bit with most of the characters, even the killers. Mondo promised his brother that he wouldn't let the gang break up or know about the nature of his death, and Monobear threatened that promise. Mondo had plenty of motive to kill, but notice, he didn't plan to kill anyone up to when Chihiro met him. Chihiro had the strength to not let Monobear win, but Mondo never had that option. Mondo was powerless against what Monobear held over him. While I definitely can't say I supported his decision to kill Chihiro, he was put in a bad position, and became a tragic character. He had to do something horrible in the hopes of keeping his promise to his brother.

And, even after all of that, he kept Chihiro's secret safe. Chihiro wanted to tell people himself what his gender was. Sure, people argue that Mondo could have done that to cover up the murder and help escape (and that's possibly a part of it), but his character was built around him keeping promises. He murdered someone to keep a promise. And even after murdering them, he kept his promise to them.

Plus, keep in mind, Alter Ego didn't resent the fact that Mondo killed Chihiro. Chihiro likely told it a lot about the other students and their situation, and probably understood the strain that was put on all of them. It was sad to know that Chihiro died, but it was also sad to know that Mondo was executed for falling prey to Monobear's tricks.

I'd say, out of anyone, Celes might be the most unlikable, for her motive to kill Ishimaru and Yamada, but even then, we don't know how much of what she said was a lie, and even when she lost, she still was willing to help the others escape.

So, not being able to read the LP past ch. 1 due to a paywall, I decided to read the manga a little bit.
Let me tell you, having the trials told from the culprit's point of view sure can make the main character seem like a prick.
I even found myself rooting for the culprit a little, which made the execution scene a million fungoes times more tragic.
That execution was still chilling no matter how little I identified with the culprit at the time.

The manga pisses me off.

It spoils the trials by GIVING AWAY THE CULPRIT'S NAME in the chapter title.

Don't read the manga unless you've finished the game.

I can't bring myself to trust Chihiro, she's just too... nice. Obviously up to something.

A Dangan Ronpa 2 LP to read while the paywall's up

Finished reading DR1. The Mastermind's punishment was hilarious, although it did remind me of the ending to the "A Series of Unfortunate Events" movie a little. She went through it like a champ.

The true ending really caught me off guard though.

I suppose either they're following the demo storyline this time or they're pulling the same "trailer/demo is different than actual thing" here. I'd suppose it would be nice to have a slightly different storyline and see what other stuff they could make, even if it ends with the focus on the same main group. But that's likely not the case, though, and it's either following the game's order of events, or just changing it REALLY slightly.
