Oh, yes, of course, I'm just a big whiny baby for pointing out something that isn't fair. How in the world am I supporting an "exclusive war" by asking for a game to be on EVERY platform?

They are asking for 150,000 dollars for cheat codes when they should be prioritizing releasing the game on every console so that they can make more cheddar from selling the game. And pointing out that this is a stupid decision is whining?

Again, Yooka-Laylee managed to develop the game for every console without any Kickstarter cheddar in the first place. Meanwhile Iga is making more than 200,000 dollars from this Kickstarter and adding things like cheat codes and a speedrun mode.

It's not unfair. Developers don't have to support every existing platform, especially when they need crowdfunding to achieve their goal in the first place. Deal with it.

What Obnosim said. They're a company selling a product, either buy it or don't. Fairness doesn't come into it. Course, with Kickstarter they're selling you the product before it's made, which is why it's kinda naive to fund any kickstarter, but still, nobody is forcing you to buy anthing.

Really, I don't even see how you could begin to think an ex-employee of a company that used to make videogames for a particular system is in any way morally obligated to continue making games for that system. They're, y'know, an individual, with free will and such. I mean, I've come to resent that term because of misuse, but 'entitlement' really does seem appropriate here.

It would be naturally, since theres a fucking huge touchscreen in the middle of the controller.

Which can be entirely disregarded. A lot of games do nothing special with it and just use it as a second screen displaying exactly what is on the television.

For the record, I'm not picking a side in this argument.

Yeah, the touchscreen doesn't matter much for development at all. It's a matter of the architecture the processor runs on - x86 (PS4, Xbone, PC) is the de facto standard for most applications these days, so the tools for it are more developed and easier to use.

Processor architecture is only a tiny thing. Compilers take care of most of that. It's the overall system architecture which matters - CPU, GPU, RAM, input, output, how everything communicates with each other, etc. PS4 and Xbone are very similar to PCs not only in terms of processor architecture. That's why it is easier to port games between them. They run different operating systems so the communication between program and OS needs to be adjusted, so you can't simply cross-compile. Yet, it's easier than porting to the Wii (U) or (3)DS which differ not only in CPU architecture (PowerPC and ARM respectively).

Where processor architecture comes into play is only really important when using highly-optimized code written in some kind of assembler. Such code is mapped quite directly to machine instructions and thus architecture independent. However, such optimizations are rather rare.

Personally I think the GPU matters more for portability than the CPU, too.

Konami announces that they're pushing mobile development hard because it's the "future of gaming"

I'm pretty sure they already announced that they're pulling out of console gaming before, but this was just adding insult to injury.

E3 is just a month away and I'm already feeling stressed with anticipation. I suspect all eyes will be on Nintendo to see if they announce anything with DeNA. Gameplay footage of a Nintendo-DeNA mobile title will be treated with the utmost scrutiny. Even a trailer for it will be, given how many mobile game ads outright refuse to show gameplay because they know it's all the same generic stuff.

Nintendo already came out and said that E3 will focus on videogames. The DeNA partnership and the NX will not be discussed.

Looking at Bloodstained, I'm not interested in it. First of all, it's 2.5D. Is it really that hard to just make things 2D? I don't want to have these finely-crafted sprites (if they even are sprites by the end of it) moving through a world composed of 3D environments that won't look nearly as good as the characters. Inti Creates is leading the development and their ability to make stellar 2D environments and such doesn't seem to have faded much; I checked out some screenshots for Azure Striker Gunvolt and the art looks great. The concept art for Bloodstained's gameplay looks great, too. Is it that hard to put together a fully 2D experience on their current budget? I mean, Dragon's Crown's budget was just around 1 million USD and it was gorgeous.

Second, the game utilizes crafting. Fuck crafting. I don't want to have to make my weapons out of materials that I grind from monsters, I want to find powerful weapons and gear on the monsters themselves or found hidden away behind a breakable wall or past some tense platforming sections. I get that the premise centers around alchemy, but still, crafting in games these days amounts to unnecessary padding and little else. I'm sure that speedrunners are going to absolutely love this game.

Posting this here rather than the League thread because it has greater implications for online gaming and online communities.

Jeffrey "Lyte" Lin of Riot Games (my favorite Rioter, because he has a PhD) did this talk about player behavior and the new machine learning system LoL is using to give feedback and even ban out toxic players. If you've got a spare 30 minutes and you're interested in the psychology of how people behave on the internet and online multiplayer games, i highly recommend you check out this video.

Also, here's an article about the automated ban system. Really cool to know that people who are extremely offensive in chat can now be smited by Skynet. The future is now
