I built the portal while I was there and was intending to properly prepare, grab a bunch of other people, and go back. I was standing on one of the portal blocks to fill in the last one on the opposite side. The portal activated, and it took me to the end.

Is it normal to re-spawn in the nether is you die there (in the nether)?

I don't think so...I always went back to my original spawn point in the overworld, not the nether. I think The End is the only place you're supposed to respawn in if you die there.
