I finished chapter six the other day. It was really really great up until the last bit, which was very intense but linear, timed in some areas, and kind of annoying. The people who complained about the large amount of loading screens and the 'tiny areas' are full of it, in my opinion--the area I had to explore in the sixth chapter felt very large and I don't recall any loading screens at all. At most, this game only has as many loading screens as Deadly Shadows did. Maybe less.

The fifth chapter wasn't all that spiffy, I don't think the game did a very good job at capturing a 'horror' atmosphere. I spent most of my time in the chapter being on guard for jump scares and flashbacks. The monsters and their ability to sense your presence without seeing or hearing you did unnerve me, and I wound up killing most of them with fire arrows. I have no qualms about being a predator-type player in these horror-type settings; I'd take a lot of holy water with me in the Shalebridge Cradle, too.

I haven't started chapter seven yet; I've been mainly working on sidequests for Basso and other clients. I spent fifteen minutes trying to find a hidden button in one area because I was too nice to smash an object, which the button was hidden under. I'm a considerate thief. Other times I just spend too long looking for a path somewhere because I either overlook things or I'm not in the right spot. I completely missed a rope-arrow beam in one place for ten minutes, and overlooked a hole in a ceiling in a different place, but I found the other end of that hole later on (I'm not very bright, or good at vidya).

The game's not as linear in areas as the reviewers made me think it would be, but there are still some areas that make you follow a path. It doesn't seem that bad to me, honestly. The only beef I have with the game at this point is ending every chapter with long cutscenes, or something very intense, but I myself am not sure how they could reduce the number of cutscenes and still convey all of the story to the player.

There IS one spot I am completely stuck on, and it's one of Basso's jobs. I'm meant to find Basso's pen for him, and it's supposed to be in an apartment over a street. There's a beam right near the window that I put a rope arrow into, but the rope is much too short to reach the ground. My guess is that it's supposed to be the way out of the apartment, and not the way in, but I have no idea how to get IN. I've scoured the whole area, at least I feel like I have, trying to find a way to that spot, but I'm drawing a blank. I saw a vertical set of planks nearby that I thought was a raised bridge, but there was no pulley to shoot. I think it's just a barrier.

This is how I felt about Hitman: Absolution. I picked it up pre-owned because it was cheap and I wanted to try it. I kept hearing how it was very linear and pretty much ditched the open map gameplay after the first mission which, as a fan of Hitman: Blood cheddar, disappointed me greatly. When I played it I liked it. It's open levels connected by linear segments, I thought it changed the game up a little bit. It gave the game a good flow, something that I feel Blood cheddar was missing. Also, I felt the same way about the cutscenes in Absolution, especially when they're on my dying Xbox 360.

I lost my shit yesterday when I found out that Stephen Russell, the voice actor for Garrett in the original games, also voiced Karras from Thief: Metal Age.

(SPEAKING of voice actors, I still miss Russell's voice terribly in this new game)

I knew he did the voice of Benny the drunk guard and Raoul the opera-singing hobo, but Karras was a new one to me.

I watched my friend play Thief (2014) on Wednesday and she was so bad at it wow

As Cori can attest to when I liveblogged it for her, she kept killing the guards and just ran up and attacked them and cori and I both screamed internally/externally. She kept using the "excuse" of "ohh i'm not good at stealth games" aaaaaarrrrrrrrrggggggggggghhhhhh!!!!

Now I want to play the Thief games just to see how it's done right.

(Heck I know I wouldn't be perfect but at least I'd know how to play a goddamn stealth game)

Doesn't it still take a decent amount of skill to fight your way through a mission or am I just terrible at the game?

You're not really supposed to 'fight' through Thief. Garrett is the definition of glass cannon, and according to Angie her friend wound up dying a *lot*.

Dying should NORMALLY be an indicator that you're doing something wrong and need to rethink your strategy!!

In a Thief game, if you find yourself in a fight that means you made a mistake (or, in the case of Thief 2014, the cutscene put you in a fight...ugh...).

Thief is not a "run-and-gun" game. It's a stealth game first and foremost. The character you play as just isn't made for it. Trying to fight every hostile foe is asking for a death sentence. Monsters and such are a different story, but the most important thing you need to remember is you can't just fight everything you encounter along the way.

But that's what I'm saying, to make any progress in that way must mean you're capable of fighting through a lot of enemies, which is an impressive feat in itself. It shows skill. I mean, not the right skill. In fact, it probably means you're terrible at the game, but still its... something. Passing a mission while playing like Rambo is difficult (I assume she passed at least one mission, right?).

She wasn't being skillful at all. She kept dying within the first 5 minutes of chapter 3. What would take a more proper stealth player like 5 minutes (maybe with some save scumming) took her 20 or so.

Oh, I thought she actually managed to pass missions doing it the wrong way, which would be impressive (stupid, but still impressive).

I find that I enjoy the old Thief games more then the new one mainly because of the lore behind the old games, with the Pagans, Hammers and Mechanists, and Garrett being the chaotic neutral between them all.

It also (to me) feels like Garrett is some sort of immortal time traveler, originating from a setting in a sort of medieval times and lives until the Victorian age.

The setting of the original Thief games were always a bit Victorian-punk, which I thought was cool. The removal of all the original lore is one of my biggest points of contention with the new game.

Plus they took cynical anti-hero Garrett and turned him into a goth princess. Which isn't to say a thiefy goth princess man wouldn't make a GREAT game protagonist, but...that's not who Garrett was meant to be.

The ending ended up being sort of confusing and underwhelming. Like really there was no build up whatsoever and the characters don't even get a chance to gain any sort of connection, as well as lack of clarity for anything that is going on.

Yeah. The ending is one of the worst parts of NuThief because it was attached to such a weak plot.
