Yes, but pokemon are generally cartoon versions of critters and are simplified, usually in a way that you can immediately tell what they're supposed to represent. I feel like when you get more weird shapes and colors in there the character is less... recognizable? Less iconic?
I keep seeing Pokemon Go (unsure if it's the official page) post on facebook, where you have a high number of people who are not die-hard fans. They posted something today asking "which is your favorite?" With the starters from all gens. A lot of folks in the comments were saying stuff like "the first three are pokemon, the rest look like fan art"
Honestly if Niantic adds the new gens slowly, i don't think people would stop playing because of it, in fact new people might be exposed to gens they haven't played before. By the time they get around to later gens the hype will have died down anyway.

Update TL;DR Alola forms, dear god, they made Delta Species canon. Exeggutor has a crazy new form that makes it a Grass/Dragon type. Gets Frisk. Vulpix and Ninetales have an Ice typing now in their Alola form, Ninetales also receives the fairy type. Sandshrew and Sandslash will also get an Alola form, consisting of Ice/Steel typing. These and the Vulpix line will get Snow Cloak as an ability.
Oricorio is a cool AF bird that can change typing to match different dances! Has the new ability "Dancer" that makes it copy dance moves! It also has Revelation Dance that copies its non-flying typing!
Minior is a Rock/Flying type that appears to be a meteor. It seems that when Minior is attacked(potentially by a supereffective attack), it will reveal its inner core that has different colors.
Gumshoos--okay if this thing isn't inspired off of Donald Trump I'm going to be disappointed.
Fomantis is a cute little flower that evolves into Lurantis.
Mudbray is the pre-evolution of the donkey Pokemon we saw before.
Alola seems to have a drastically different setup from previous games, gyms could be replaced by island challenges, these feature a Totem boss, which are super-powered pokemon that can call upon aid. Finishing a trial will face you off against a Kahuna, which are probably this game's gym leaders.
Z-moves are special attacks that appear to be ridiculously powerful, they also include a goofy dance!
Not sure how to feel about this, I love the Vulpix and Sandshrew alola forms, but on the other hand, I'm kind of still hoping for new mega evolutions...

Hoping that Oricorio is the only Pokemon with Dancer. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Dancer has the Pokemon use the same dance move as a Cockfighting Society around it, meaning that if a player used an Oricorio and another Pokemon with the ability Dancer, it would be infinite dancing. Willing to bet not though.

it wouldn't make sense for it to be infinite because the idea is you have to actually use the move
when dancer copies it, the pokemon isn't using a move it knows, it's ability just proc'd.

Okay so most of the new stuff looks cool but Exeggutor and the Z-move animations just make me laugh my head off. It seriously looks like your character is trying to pull off a Sailor Moon transformation/Dragon Ball Z attack.

I've realized how Rowlet just sits there during Litten's Inferno Overdrive. Most of these Z-Moves look capable of causing major collateral damage anyways. What's up with that?
