I would only have that for a holiday. There's a lot of ways for that to be abused, with alt accounts and such.

So maybe if that got instituted there would be a philanthropy bonus or something that would earn you discounts on gifts

You mean the spreadsheets that are largely accepted by the entire TF2 community as the given value for items? The ones used by the serious traders who set the standard, much like any economy ever? Which by disregarding you're doing the equivalent of saying that you don't care what America says a dollar's worth is because you only accept your own interpretation of its value?

No he's saying that he doesn't care how much others say the stuff you buy for the dollar is worth. Like the shoes you're wearing.
Which depending on if he is cheaper or more expensive than others either means no one is going to buy his shit or everyone wants to buy his shit.
Which is part of an economy too.
Buyers will go to the one who gives them the same thing for the lowest price obviously and if he has enough wares to satisfy the needs of all buyers, the others have to go along with that if they want to sell anything, effectively lowering the overall price of the item.
