Valve let's developers ban users from launching their game, no VAC needed. As of now, on the official page for it, there is no mention of his is for all games or just titles with multiplayer in it. Such a ban would prevent you from playing the single player portion of the game if the game has both, though.

Does Valve ever stop and think about the features they try to implement and how they could possibly be abused? I can't wait for a YouTube reviewer to get banned from a game because they gave it a bad review.

Oh boy, that'll turn into at least another 30 minutes of TotalBiscuit bitching at a microphone.

Calling it now, if such a system was put in place then Jim Sterling would be one of the first reviewers on the bad end of the piss-stick. After all, he reviews horrible games and makes the developers of said games upset and butthurt. He hurt Konami's fee-fees so much that they actually did blacklist him.

At least in the EU if they did this to someone they would owe them a full refund (unless it was for a valid reason like hacking).

While trying to convert items to Indian Rupees (apparently), the Steam Community Market shit itself (this next part definitely happened, I saw it myself). Items that were normally only a few tens of dollars were now being put up for thousands. Popular listings were in the millions. There were even some that were listed as negative price. As of the time of this post the Community Market is disabled and people who put up listings of items that were affected are allegedly being banned from selling and trading and possibly banned from other outlets, such as game bans or complete service bans altogether.

Valve.
Get your shit together.

This week has not been very kind to Valve. Karma must be catching up to them.

I'm just tired of the direction Valve has been taking Steam. I've discussed it before, but they've turned what used to be a game store/client and loose social network into a bizarre metagame filled with cards, badges, and especially the sales which now feel like they have more in common with special events in MMOs, all of them centered around making them more cheddar. You could say with some level of truth that the game that Valve's been making instead of Half-Life 3 is Steam. Don't even get me started on their lax quality control on Greenlight and Early Access. I understand that it's their product and they are in their right to try and make cheddar off of nearly every facet of it, but that doesn't mean I have to agree with every decision they've made or will make.

In other news, this article discusses events in which people have been subject to ridiculous treatment just because their opinions about the current state of videogames are unpopular. This includes a group of people getting kicked out of a convention and banned from attending for 10 years and then being subjected to an arrest attempt for peacefully assembling across the street, and a meetup getting a bomb threat called on it. Anything in the name of progress, right? But in all seriousness, these actions are not the kind you want to take to sway someone over to your side in an argument. It only breeds more distrust and vitriol and discourages debate on a topic already chock-full of it.

Valve honestly still has a lot of respect from me as a company. They do seem to be finding a ton of ways to make themselves more cheddar, but as long as they treat their customers well, provide the service they say they will, and not force people to spend more than they want to, i say good for them; they are a business after all. And they've shown that they're willing to listen to feedback and make a U-turn when one of their cheddar-making plans isn't welcome.

I'm not saying valve is perfect either, but personally I'd say their "karma" is still net positive. People like to over-sensationalize and joke around and say that a few recent mistakes represent some huge failure of steam as a whole. Valve is a huge ship, it prolly isn't going to sink anytime soon.

What is even wrong with Origin at this point? At least they have good customer service.

Edit: Besides that it's fucking EA obviously

Valve lost a lot of standing with me after the paid proletariats bullshit. It's a recent wound. I don't know how long it will take for me to think positively of Valve again.
