I feel like noting that Aonuma's initial comment wasn't that "nobody explicitly said the character was male", but rather it was "nobody explicitly said the character was Link".

The former statement could tease every non-Link possibility, male or female.

Hell, I'm totally down for a female Link, would be really interesting in my book.

I don't think anything would change besides the pronouns.

link is has that androgynous build already
plus you can typically him whatever you want in the game

i wouldn't really care what they did with link but if they made zelda the protagonist i'd want them to actually make it play differently, zelda has enough recurring elements to make her as a playable character really different and interesting (ie use of disguises and aliases with different skill sets, focus on magic, skill with a bow, 'wisdom' instead of 'courage' etc)

i mean it's pretty similar to how there's the whole 'sword+shield and tools' 'green outfit' 'horse called epona' schtick link has.
