I'm not here to discuss people who might do something or might say something, these fake men, "straw men" if you will.
Smogon are are group of people who want to play a game a certain way and people insist on hating them for it.
These smogonites were the people I faced when I did POP competitive online (before even VGC was around).
The people who disconnected the instant there was a Pokemon not in their tier.
The people who complained over voice chat (the main reason I no longer use it, though also because I want control over what I'm going to hear and people are assholes in general) about "tier mixing".
The people I still see on occasion bitching about people who "don't appreciate the smogon ruleset" when they enter random match ups and get mad that the other person is using Mewtwo. When they're probably a 10 year old kid that hasn't even heard of smogon. I've seen them on my gamer's club facebook feed, and smogon-related sites with decent sized competitive smogon communities. It occasionally pops up on Smogon, but they're good enough about keeping that shit out.
Smogon is a useful tool even if you don't agree with it (and there are many things I don't agree with Smogon on). The main beef is how overbloated it is how people treat it and how demanding the users and followers CAN be about how to play. Which is the main beef I have with most sides of competitive games.
I never implied all smogonites were assholes that did this (or rather, I didn't mean to if it came across like that, so apologies for that in advance), but when you encounter an asshole that does this, it's deeply irritating in the way that their argument seems to imply that their ruleset is the proper way to play that everyone else should conform to. Same as any other kid getting butthurt that you use Charizard when they hate Charizard. There are also people on Smogon that hate this behavior, but it's hard to stop.
I'm perfectly fine with them existing and doing their own thing, but what gets me is that when you do things like random matches, you're opening up yourself to any type of strategy possible in the game. Including the irritating 6 megastone team to perfectly counter whatever you put up. It's just something you have to deal with if you want to randomly fight people. Getting mad about it doesn't help anything, because you're choosing to fight in a match with someone you can't control or enforce rules on.If you're expecting to play online against people using the same ruleset as you, random matches is not the way to go.
