For some reason the 1.8 prerelease and PR#2 weren't laggy, and neither was 1.8
1.8.1 comes around and suddenly I can't play without turning off my multi-monitor, all other programs except for Avira, and switching to Fullscreen so it doesn't have to render the desktop, and I STILL get unbearable lag.
Even with 1.9 PR1
Haven't tried PR2 yet, but I have low, LOW hopes.

but 1.9 PR runs terribly.

Jesus Christ I had the same problem. I got about 60 FPS if I changed everything down to terribad quality, but now I get about 20 with the 1.9 PR. What is happening :psyduck:

Alpha, beta, release candidate, release.

Versions often have developer versions. Pre-release is a developer version. These releases are not usually shared with the public unless the source is open. The reason they are not shared is because they run like shit, have no optimization, are full of bugs and may or may not devour your hard drive.

you can put minecraft in fullscreen? how?

unless you mean just enlarging the window. Cause if that's the case, that'll just make your framerate worse :v

Press F11.

I am tempted to quote a few posts I made after every single update since I joined the forums about how to optimize your minecraft client. It seems like people forget it quickly...

A few things you must understand about minecraft. The graphics are low tech. The engine is not. Meaning that this game is controlling 16x16x128x9 blocks at the same time around you. That is 294 912 blocks at the same time. It is very RAM heavy and quite CPU intensive.

Also, try setting render distance to far. If your GPU sucks, it will have problems with rendering the fog. Setting it to far will remove this issue completely. Try to tinker around with the settings to see what settings work for your computer. Minecraft is not your run of the mill game. The concept is really revolutionizing the gaming industry and this is one of the first versions on how to control such a map.

I realize I actually did that calculation wrong. The correct one is 16x16x128x9x9 which equals 2 654 208 blocks.

that's helpful, except for the far rendering thing. I really do work better on fog. Far rendering tends to freeze me up.

That is also one of the things that depend on your GPU. Try as many different combinations as you can with the settings as the fog might be a reason you are lagging, but you might be lagging on far because of another setting.

So I finally got Minecraft, and decided to try out single player.

Turns out I can't play single player unless I play online first, so I play online.

It starts loading, everything is fine, until it stops.

Just before the end.

And never moves again.

EVER.

Can someone help me with this?

If you're running it for the first time, delete your C:\users\(yourname)\appdata\roaming\.minecraft\bin folder.
Then try running it again.
That removes the minecraft.jar file, but when running Minecraft again, it makes a new one.
