Wow, I didn't know they could remove blocks. I just thought they carried them for effect.

but watermoats keep mobs alive during the day

they are the worst defense you can have

the man speaks sense. but you could build the moat on top of a layer of spiderwebs since water can't pass through that but mobs can, then have some death trap underneath the webs. It'd be a heck of a build project but you'd be nigh invulnerable

or wait would the mobs just stay at the surface of the water and never sink? or if the water was shallow enough for them to immediately contact the webs maybe it wouldn't matter. I'll test this but I think it'd work.

Like, I only played minecraft for a little while, but couldn't you just dig a big empty moat?

Spiders, creepers, skeletons. One can climb, the other will probably blow you up when you fall in and one can still shoot you.

spiders can't climb ceilings so a moat shaped like this would work

then cover the hole with glass so skeletons can't shoot you. This still leaves creepers down there indefinitely though.
Lava would be a good option if you could get it to work but I've never gotten lava to be self sustaining. It always goes away after long enough.
