Gaming tried to have online capabilities all the way back to the Famicom being pitched to keep track of stock prices. The Gameboy Color was planned to have support with the GB Cell Adapter, though the only game that really used it was Pokemon Crystal. The main feature of the Gameboy Advance was going to be online service with a subscription, much like what the Vita did later, but ended up being scrapped late into the project because of the lack of interest in the feature and the lack of games planning to use it, resulting in going back to link cables. Pokemon would have likely used the online features for both Pokemon cloud storage (like Bank) and trading/battling (the GTS from Gen 4). It wasn't until the era of the DS that online console gaming became more than a niche for 2-3 games on a console.

After doing some quick research, it turns out that Xband was the ones who made got the ball rolling for online console gaming. As Airra said, they developed the system for Genesis and SNES games. After that, they moved onto making the same experience for the Saturn, but ended up failing. Strangely enough, Sega used their own tech to beat them and creating the Saturn's NetLink attachment in the process. When they did this, Sega then started up their own online service called the SegaNet (NetLink in the U.S.), which they then carried over onto the Dreamcast to handle the online side of the games.

How this transferred into today's consoles was that one of Sega's most popular online titles was Phantasy Star Online. The game was universally well received, and it charged a monthly fee to be played online. Once the Dreamcast died, Microsoft took what they learned from their former partners (MS helped Sega develop the Dreamcast's OS) and PSO, and used it as a basis to develop the original Xbox Live service.

Too bad the Xband thing didn't move on to the N64.

Imagine the worldwide drama Mario Party would have started that wasn't related to the N64 stigmata.

Given that stuff like this exists, I think we should thanks the heavens it didn't. Forget friendships, it would have caused world war.

I'm playing Banjo Kazooie and I really, REALLY want to love it but I just don't.

This game is super fucking punishing and it makes it kind of unfun to play.

You lose all your music notes just for dying one time, are you kidding me?

Forget Mario Party 6, you want a game that will really ruin your friendship?
Wario Party 5.

The house rules of Wario party are as follows:

• No reading minigame explanations.
• If you played a previous game of Wario party, you receive all your previous stars as a handicap (from 3 onward)

Wario Party 5 however, is a special circumstance. You can use items on spaces in Mario Party 5, causing that space to become permanently linked to that item.

• Always take an item
• Always use that item on an EMPTY space ASAP
• Using it on yourself or a non-blank space (barring the end when you run out of spaces and you have one that you really HATE [i'm looking at you condor]) means you have to sit out of minigames
• 50 turns

Wario Party 5 only works with 4 players, computers won't follow house rules.

But the first two are the only ones that have a minigame that causes a physical injury!

Now I just wanna figure out how someone wears down a glove from playing Mario Party.
