Pretty sure I read somewhere that some Konami exec said that the intent was to make Quiet sexually appealing.

Edit: Oh, right, it was Kojima himself who said that Quiet's design is supposed to be "sexy" in order to encourage cosplay.

Not even talking about the fact that female characters are fictional and can't be compared to the way real women behave, there is a difference between a character being sexy and a character being oversexualized. Does she look sexy? Yeah sure. Is it bad? Her outfit is dumb as hell, but not the worst.

The problem is the oversexualization. The camera focuses mostly on her breasts and ass in cutscenes, zooming on them pretty much as often as possible, and she almost always enters a cutscene with the camera zooming out from her breasts or ass. The camera considers her above all as a sexual thing to crave after instead of a character. Her outfit was designed this way to be sexy-trashy and has no other reason to look like this - her backstory only explains that she has to show some skin, not that she has to wear a bikini bra and torn leggings during military operations. It's gross and immature, and it made a bunch of people very uncomfortable, and saying "maybe she just likes to wear these things!" doesn't change that she isn't a real person with free will - she was designed to be this way by someone else. We're not talking about a real woman deciding to get into the porn industry, we're talking about a fictional character made by men to appeal to other men and their dicks. It looks like Kojima is taking the piss at people who called the way his games treat female characters gross and making his last game even worse in that regard, to be honest.

Nobody's saying Quiet is a bad character. What people are saying is that attempted rape scenes, gross shower scenes with other soldiers watching along with disgusting ingame comments, and the constant focus on her tits and ass is gross, immature and uncalled for. People aren't criticizing Quiet for being a bad person or even a bad character, people are criticizing the decisions that Kojima Productions made while designing her, people are saying she's a bad design.

So no, it's not because "women aren't allowed to be sexy". It's because "character designers should know better". I'm afraid the issue doesn't come from the people that think there is a problem. If you don't think there's a problem when the one prominent female character of the game spends most of her screentime in cutscenes being sexualized, well, I'm afraid you should wake up and smell the coffee.

Man, Metal Gear Solid has always interested me but Quiet honestly puts me off of the whole idea. All the footage I've seen is uncomfortable, and no matter how well developed her character is I don't see myself really engaging with it because of that.

How long does it take to unlock her more covered alt outfits?

Not like sexual assault and torture hasn't been part of the narrative in previous Metal Gear Solid games. Both female AND male. They're part of the story and establish a character. Everyone hates rape and torture, so they understand the character's pain and trauma and how it changes or establishes their character. That's the point of sexual assault and torture scenes in any form of media. And by the way, mere seconds before the actual rape, Quiet breaks free and proceeds to kill everyone involved in an amazing action scene. And you're calling that amazing action scene that shows off a powerful female character a bad thing.

Well, she was put in a cell at Mother Base, assumingly the shower wasn't made for privacy because it's, well, in a cell. Admittedly they could have put the cells beyond a door or something, but that wouldn't stop soldiers from peeking. There are other female soldiers from what I have seen, so designated female prison cells could've been established. So I'll admit that's slightly questionable.

Well, it's 1974, I would imagine there would be sexists back then.

Have you seen Raiden's cyborg booty in Rising? Jesus. It's bodaciously perfect. No man could ever have such a perfect booty. That's just unfair to men who want to have nice asses and sets unreasonable standards. And those heels of his! How could they expect any man to be able to do anything remotely close to what he does in heels like that!? And don't even get me started on how his hair is always so perfect no matter what he does! And he can have his eye removed completely and still have a perfect face.

Speaking of Raiden, there's also the part in MGS2 where he has to walk around naked for several minutes. That added nothing to the story and was just there to show a naked man. Ugh, honestly, Kojima, that was just ridiculous. And then there's Vamp! Ugh, the sexual things he does could fill an entire book! And don't forget about the way Otacon is treated! Honestly, all these male characters are utterly humiliated in every game! It's just awful! You can read more about these ugly atrocities here.
