I'm hoping the eventual Mario and Luigi 4 will have the Wario Bros.
Each game uses the number in the title as part of the game. Partners in Time was called "2x2" in Japan to reference that the brothers were being "doubled" with the addition of the babies.
Bowser's Inside Story (3) referenced Bowser being teamed up with the Bros.
Hopefully 4 will include the Wario Brothers, or maybe they'll bring Peach and Daisy into the picture, but that seems a bit unlikely, since the plots are usually Peach-centric.
I would kill for an M&L 4.
Bowser's Inside story is my 2nd favorite in the series (nothing can beat the original just because of the nostalgia factor)
2nd wasn't so good. The babies had so little defense and attack that you had to generally avoid enemies whenever you were near them. Having to buy special attacks was annoying as hell. I'm glad they brought back the Bros points
The second game was my favorite in the series. BIS was a bit disappointing personally, and didn't quite live up to the other two for me, but it was still a solid game.
And buying the moves wasn't terrible, it wasn't like there was much else to spend cheddar on, and it was easy to stockpile the moves that were good.
And the babies weren't without the older bros. much anyways, so their crappy stats didn't matter too much.
Plus, this is the best music in the entire series:

I particularly infuriated when reached the end of the game where I didn't have enough bros items or cheddar to even have a chance to beat the first phase of the final boss
How was it disappointing? It was more like the original than the second one. Anyway, THIS was the best music.

Yesss, BIS had such good final boss music and the final boss was really fun to fight.
I didn't like PiT as much as the other two it got really frustrating at some parts, like the desert. The first game had that place too and just made me hate going though it, and that was Joke's End. Hate that Place.

All the enemies in Joke's end were balls hard.
I did, however, like the fact that there were hidden bros move that you could learn in the 1st and the advanced moves were some of my favorites. It always filled me with excitement when i the brothers talked to each other than the "Advanced!" little splash came up. Then you had to learn how do it and what it did. Some of them were REALLY good too, like the hammer one where you can continuously hat the enemy until you miss. The others, like the element bros advances were not so great.

The one where Luigi jumps in the air and then shoots a lighting bolt was good, it always lowered the defense of everything, and was really helpful on the final boss' first form.

BIS had just, the best final boss.
I'm a sucker for presentation, and everything about it was just set up perfectly. The music, chasing down Dark Bowser, everything was just so perfect.
I also REALLY liked how it was hard but not unfair. So once you got down the timing to dodge his attacks and you were able to really start beating on him, you just fucking felt good, like this was the logical end to things and how shit was supposed to go down properly.

I dunno, I found Dark Bowser way too easy. The Dark Star was the hardest boss of that game, despite having only half its power. When it's restored to full power, you expect it to be harder.Dark Bowser only had 4 attacks!
That said, though, presentation wise the boss fight was fantastic.
I love the M&L series. The first ranks as one of my favorite games of all time. It had a great story that always threw a twist at you, great art style, and in my opinion introduced the best battle system of any RPG. My favorite bros attack was the advanced version of the one where Luigi smacks mini mario like a baseball; you could go infinite damage with proper timing, and it was easy as hell to pull off!
Partners in Time wasn't as good in terms of story, and the babies got annoying. However, it had WAY better bosses and the music was fantastic.
I absolutely love Bowser's Inside Story. It did kind of have a weak story too, as most of the time I couldn't figure out what exactly was being accomplished, but come on...you got to play as Bowser! And the whole switching between him and the Bros. inside of him was such a great gameplay mechanic. All of the bosses were challenging, and it used every single one of the DS's functions well. Minion attacks ruled.
So yeah, I can't wait for M&L 4. I hope it's with the Wario Bros. Assign one character for every button on the 3DS like they did in PiT. Perfect!

I didnt like either Partners in Time or Bowsers Inside story. The games felt kind of watered down to me, and besides nobody is mentioning the true original Starter for the series: Legend of the Seven Stars. I remember beating it at 5 years old, first game I ever beat. My sister tipped me off to Culex and dear GOD that was so terrifyingly hard. The story was compelling, Bowser was a goofy loon at times, the bosses were seriously invigorating (Yardovich is one of my favorite bosses to this day) and the end boss was incredibly badass. And I liked Superstar Saga, even if they did play off the bros popularity a bit much.
