Sometimes I think, maybe I wanna join the army. I mean, it's basically like FPS, except better graphics!

Nah, the problem is that the loading time is huge, and the respawn time? Oh, that's flipping AGES! I mean, the shortest time anyone's respawned in that was in 3 days, and he was a hacker!

So is basically ever videogame made ever. It'd be boring and annoying if you died after two shots.

That's largely how most modern games play, at least on multiplayer. Rainbow Six, SWAT, Call Of Duty (well, online, where nearly everyone plays the "really hard mode" mode).

SWAT is a brilliant series though, because it is so realistic, and far more about planning and careful manoeuvring than regular shoot-outs that normally define FPSes.

But a lot of shooting games are trying to be realistic. Isn't that the premise of the first person game anyway? You're looking through the soldier's eyes, and shooting daisies Nazzis. So how come your everyday soldier can take so many shots?

Now, taking multiple bullets to the chest is nonsensical in WWII games, mafia games, urban crime games, SWAT games, et cetera. But in sci-fi games, it's perfectly forgivable. Master Cheif is wearing futuristic armor, taking damage from futuristic bullets, so who knows how many bullets is unrealistic? Also, he's genetically modified.

So that means that the unrealistic, sci-fi games are the ones that are actually realistic, because they have an explanation for their crap. Crazy.

Don't you think this might be a reason "Genetically modified space marine" is such a common premise in first person shooting games? It actually makes sense, as opposed to the list of games with realistic premises. Now, I'm not saying this is the only reason. It's generally badass, and video game developers are uncreative sometimes. But I think the fact that it works, and it actually has an explanation for its unrealistic elements makes it an easy setting to gravitate toward for video game developers.

I guess I'm just ragging on first person shooters here. Games in the genre might be great, but they need to work on their premises. Some new settings somewhere between modern and CRAZY FUTURE might go over well.

I'd kind of like to see a WWII game where if you take one bullet, you're out of the fight. Maybe instead of respawning, you'd immediately switch control to another soldier on your side, who was previously being controlled by a computer. As you switch characters, you get to use different weapons that various soldiers would be assigned with handling. It doesn't need to be a great game, in fact, it probably wouldn't be, but maybe instead of actionny gameplay, this game could focus heavily on immersion. When an artillery round hits near you, you hear the loud explosion, then everything else gets quieter, as if you're losing your hearing. Basically, the game would use various effects to make playing it feel like a Hollywood movie. Maybe this game would be set in a trench warfare battle. In fact, it doesn't even have to be WWII. Maybe WWI would be more interesting. So yeah. That's my idea. It's not my idea of a perfect game. The perfect game, if it's ever going to be made, will be years and years from now. But I think this game, if it ever gets made, would be a step in the right direction.

Mormoncraft... Sorry for the jumbled ADD post.

Oh wait, forgot the ultimate part of why FPSes are unrealistic: People spontaneously die from getting shot! A bullet in the side of your foot kills you just as quickly as getting your head blown off.

Oddly enough, I think someone did this. A FPS and RTS combo, like C&C Renegade did in a way. There would be a number of infantry slotted to FPS mode, and one RTS commander for each side as the host. The commander builds stuff and controls vehicles, but can allow players to use them if needed.

Huhn. My friends and I were actually discussing this.

I like RTS. A lot. But a perfect game for my RTS needs to have a customizable army. Clothing, weapons, colors. Ect. And I don't want balance issues, or an endgame in multiplayer delving into just spamming one type of unit. Company of Heroes, I'm talking to you. Hell, if I could have backstories and symbol options, I think my computer would be messy.

Okay, so imagine Legend of Zelda and the Elder Scrolls series were merged. It would have the expansive world and character interactment of ES, with the dungeons and gameplay of Zelda.

Oh yeah, and we maybe throw in some MGS and the party system from KH.

RTS with people FPSing the infantry with RPG style upgrades for the infantry with puzzle based minigames and combine all the other genres I forgot and place it in the C&C universe and make it free for the iPhone!

Sounds good.

I'll get right on that.

Although, I think a mixture of adventure/FPS and RTS would be kind of cool. One player oversees everything, and makes the plans, and the individual players goes thru with those plans, like building or attacking.

While we're on the subject, why are FPSes always either broken up in mission format, or confined in small spaces? Are there any open world FPSes?

Yeah, I was kind of wondering that too.

I would like FPS a lot more if they were open world. I don't really like games broken into mission format..

Fallout 3 in a pinch. There's also STALKER: Clear Sky and the upcoming RAGE.

STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl as well. There's also supposed to be a third one coming out soon.
