Why would monsters spawn in a mode called peaceful

I ran into one in all the times I've played. I thought it was a glitch at first.

Peaceful mode sounds boring. If I wanted to play without any threat, I'd just go on creative.

I wonder if those Gasts can go through the portal too (also they look really creepy, i wonder what noise they make).

Also I hope he includes health in SMP as it would be really good going down a big group taking on the Gasts. I'm guessing they can spawn in light (but only in hell).

Yeah monsters comming through portals would be cool as fuck.

I'm hoping you can make portals as big as you want to, I'd love to make a huge portal on the side of a mountain.

I hope you can make them really big too, I wonder if you could like make one in the sea? Would water go through? (actually well idk as like you need fire to start it, you can't start fire underwater) but if you put a spring next to it would it 'put it out' (saying it like that as idk if you can douse a portal).

EDIT: on his twitter notch said the portals must be 2x3, however he also said he might change that.

I wonder if they actually need to be lined with obsidian, or if that was just decoration.

No that's how you make them. You make the frame out of obsidian and then set fire to the ground beneth it to create the portal.

It would be better if you had to herd a sheep to the obsidian frame and kill it with a golden sword for the portal to open.

Only we kinda destroyed the sub-orbital cannon yesterday. Adding to this is that mine carts don't quite work right in multiplayer right now.

I'd probably just end up riding pigs again. Or maybe branch out into cows.
