This generation, we'll get Platinum and possibly
Gold and Silver remakes (please please please please etc). Next generation? I dunno.
They've been making each generation mainly on the premise that the battling engine has been tweaked and improved - adding new 'mon isn't washing too well with the critics anymore and the storyline never changes that much (but I'd still much rather play the story than waste my life EVing stuff... been there, made a competitive team, wondered what all the fuss was about), and the Big Online Barrier has been pretty much passed. But the metagame is pretty much perfected now and a lot of competitive players are getting bored because they've suddenly been able to get 15 battles an hour rather than 15 battles a year, so the next gen would really need to shake things up if it hopes to sell any significant amount - of course, it's Cockfighting Society, so it'll naturally sell enough copies to allow Sugimori to build a Pikachu-themed Gundam and terrorize Tokyo, regardless of what they do to the series.
Personally, I'd love it if they ripped it right back down to it's basics and built a game based much more on the single player adventure. Throw a little drama and excitement in there. The single player gameplay really hasn't changed that much since Generation 1. It speaks volumes that one of the big hype things for Platinum was HOLY SHIT, A HANDFUL OF THE TRAINER SPRITES HAVE A 2-FRAME ANIMATION NOW 8D 8D 8D
But yeah. Cockfighting Society reinvented from the ground up to be an epic single-player adventure, whilst retaining a fun and still competitive metagame would be godlike.
