Killing things should be reserved for self defense, and deciding that the entire population of a town doesn't need to exist anymore.

Killing things works well when you explore as much as I do. Level 12 and I just got into Novac.

Dead Wind Cavern is empty and the "legendary" deathclaw is dead. Compared to the abominations at the Divide, he was a little bitch.

Did you check under the Overseer's desk?

Yes I did. Hence the fucked up bit. Sitting in a chair and suddenly robot deathsquad. Huzzah for pulse grenades.

You know what's really fucked up?

Congratulations, citizens of Vault 11! You have made the decision not to sacrifice one of your own. You can walk with your head held high knowing that your commitment to human life is a shining example to us all. And to make that feeling of pride even sweeter, I have some exciting news. Despite what you were led to believe, the population of Vault 11 is not going to be exterminated for its disobedience. Instead, the mechanism to open the main vault door has now been enabled, and you can come and go at your leisure. But not so fast! Be sure to check with your overseer to find out if it's safe to leave. Here at Vault-Tec, your safety is our number one priority.

Vault-Tec clearly intended for the inhabitants to rebel against the ultimatum given to them and this message patting them on the back for being stellar examples of humanity, yet they still built mechanical euthanasia into the program. Why bother? Why not just have the tunnel lead to a back door and release the person into the wilderness? He might good as dead anyway, but at least then they would have a fucking chance.

That's actually what I was expecting. I sat in that chair and figured that the machine would tell the dweller the truth behind the process, open a door, and give them some supplies to start their new life away from the Vault. Hence the appearance of the robot deathsquad was a huge "OH FUCK YOU GUYS" moment.

To be fair, the second I caught a whif that the place was a "sacrifice one of your own to survive" I predicted that the main plot was driven by the fact that the inhabitants were supposed to rebel. That whole premise has been played and done in countless sci-fi movies.

As for there actually being a robot death squad, remember that they had a vault where the main test was "what do radiation do!?" where the locking mechanism was designed to not close properly. Vault-Tec was run by a bunch of dicks. That much is clear.

Amoral scientists are one thing, but Vault-Tec was clearly run by either sadists or idiots. Possibly both. The only thing that doesn't make sense is that there were a few Vaults that were actually designed to do what they were supposed to - save lives. Vault 3 is one example.

The idea of a livable wasteland was foreign to Vault-Tec and pre-war society in general. They didn't even know if putting in a backdoor was a good idea, let alone the idea of opening it on command like that. There could have been anything out there, something that could break through an airlock and endanger the vault and- god forbid- the experiment!

Shit, just make the backdoor/airlock as indestructible as the Vault door. Bond villians were in charge of Vault-Tec.

Yeah, if there's one thing about the Vaults it's their incredible durability. Mechanisms still work, systems still work, and even if there's some cave-ins it doesn't detract much from the Vault's ability to function. Though the inhabitants seem to be very good at fucking over their Vaults.

Also in Vault 11 I found something I assume to be a mini-nuke trap. It was on the floor with the Overseer's office, but down a ways. Boone runs in, breaks a tripwire, and nothing happens for a few seconds. Then suddenly everything blows up and I'm dead.

Grenade bouquet, the tripwire drops a few frags that were hanging from the ceiling. They were rather common in Fallout 3 but you can finish New Vegas without ever seeing a single one.
