I got this game a few weeks ago (took it back, as well) on the hunt for RE6 at RedBox. When I failed to find it at the first box, I found Skyrim at the second and got it instead, immediately; I never imagined we'd have found a copy of Skyrim since it's SOOO awesome. Ma actually asked when I'd be giving it back, and I bodaciously said, "Fuck you, I've got SKYRIM." I felt like Chuck Norris.

First (and only) character was a 1H female Orc named Dahlia. Why a female Orc? Because she was sexy as hell, and kicked booty. Who wouldn't want a woman like that?.. on that lovely note... Anyways, since she was my introductory character, she didn't really have a specific allegiance to anyone except Whiterun, so it was: rape and pillage the snotty elf guys, sorta bother the Stormcloaks (racist pricks), and ignore General Tugonmypubes because he's pretty harmless so far. Amazingly, I've avoided garnering a bounty over 100 gold, and she's persuasive enough to dissuade any guard who looks at her funny... if not, I can always yell at them to death with her Dragon Bone armor. "Pootis POW!!!"

Also, those zombie guys in Skyrim are called Draugr: ancient Nordic warriors who served the dragons in the time that they reigned. When the dragons are resurrected, so are they since they're cursed to serve their draconic masters. Not much of a spoiler since it's fairly insignificant as a plot point, but.. well, there it is.

I got Skyrim on sale. I'm playing a (Destruction) mage so far. Is it worthwile or even necessary to invest in anything else?

You need to level enchanting to make the most out of the endgame. Other then that, alteration, restoration and conjuration offer good options to protect yourself.

Conjuration and Restoration kinda went to the wayside. One I got Grand Healing I didn't need anything else. Illusion is pretty neat if you want to get more strategic with your dealings than just "shoot fireballs at it". I put a bunch on alteration, but then never really use alteration spells. Then again, there's a few passive alteration perks that are actually pretty decent.

As for enchanting, for the most part your mage shit will come enchanted, but it'll still be very necessary for things that don't (necklaces and shit).

Illusion for Silent Casting makes mage more fun. Throw a fireball at a guard from stealth and watch them run around.

Is it viable to get into enchanting as a mage and just enchant your own heavy armor?

Only at high levels of enchanting. Don't fortify magicka regen btw, just stack fortify destruction and when you get dual enchanting add restoration.

Or as a melee person, fortify Destruction and Stamina Regen. Then slap fire damage and drain health on the weapon and you will never die.

Enchanting is also useful just to make cheddar.

Take any old armor or jewelry you find, and enchant it. Now it's worth more gold, which you can use to buy whatever you want. Even with a pittiful enchantment with a petty soul gem, it still ups the value significantly. And you can find soul gems everywhere.

Enchanting is more or less the most game-breaking element of the game. Both for the gear/weapon power, and the cheddar.

There's also those alchemy exploits. If they still work, I dunno.

I forgot about the Alchemy thing. But I think Terraem was going the Mage angle, and Alchemy is Thief...

Did they ever fix that thing where Archery is boosted by the Thief Stone, even though it's a Warrior skill? I assume not, since I have the Thief stone up and my Archery is super high, but it could just be 'cause that's all I use. I only wonder because I'm starting my new melee character and if the Warrior Stone doesn't affect Archery then I need to remember to switch stones when I grind that skill.

Enchanting is a pain in the booty until you can track down some soul gems to start off with. I suggest raiding a few necromancer camps, or maybe a few hagraven covens to get them. After that, you spend your profits on empty soul gems and just take everyone's soul.

Bound weapon + steal soul perk = all the filled soul gems
You should definitely have some form of mellee weapon skill. Helps in the beginning when you do not yet regenerate more mana than you could possibly spend.
