So apparently I can snipe manually. I always thought I had to use VATS for long-range stuff, then when I see ED-E shooting things from half the continent away I decide to try for myself. Suddenly two herds of Bighorns are dead and I'm looking for more targets.

Kind of stupid how enemies can still tell where I am though since I don't have a silencer for my Cowboy Repeater.

No it definitely isn't. I would think that distance would lend me some sort of cover though since I'm generally a pinprick on the horizon from my target.

I started over now, only at level 6 right now. But yeah I'll be going for the sniper stuff soon enough, since I know the rifle appears at level 11. Doing exploration though. Already found someplace called Prospector's Den and Jackrabbit Springs.

There were no jackrabbits at the springs. Just radiation, unholy abominations the game wants to call centaurs, and a super mutant master.

Things that are silenced/silenceable (that are also worth shooting at people).

Varmint Rifle
Sniper Rifle
Anti-Material Rifle (GRA)
45 Auto (handgun)

In fact, I think the only sniper-ish weapon you can't silence is the Hunting Rifle. Either way, you find yourself one of these, and you're good to go.

Ratslayer is in a cave that some lady tells you about in Freeside. You can always just google "ratslayer" and go right for the source as well. The Gobi Sniper Rifle is in the 100-lockpick-needed chest in the snipers nest near the legion camp on the southeast end of the map.

Those two are a must to make it both fun, and challenging. The ATM is good as well, but only using ratslayer to clear an entire town is its own reward since one screw up and they'll know something's up. You have to go for the head to be guaranteed. The ATM I use for deathclaws, and moments I'm feeling sassy and decide to no scope a raider who thinks it's a good idea to run at a guy wielding a 50 caliber rifle with a knife.

Centaurs are fun, wait until you find Devil's Throat. Ignore the name, it's actually lovely place to settle down and raise a family.

There's a fan film series on Youtube called Nuka Break. After one episode, I can safely say that it is fucking hilarious. It's narrated by Vic Mignogna, who also has occasional cameos.

Exploration would be nicer if I wasn't constantly coming across irradiated sites. ED-E helps take out the feral ghouls though, so I can at least come away with just a bit of radiation. Finshing up tonight at level 8 with 90 in Repair and on the road to Nipton tomorrow.
