Ummm... maybe you could make a merchant skin (for all you rich bastards) a miner skin, and an adventurer skin? that are all made from a base skin you make?

The only non-terrible fancharacter skin i've seen on the MC skin database is a toa tahu skin i used for awhile.

Couldn't be too hard to edit, especially since Lewa, Tahu, and Kopaka all had the same torso design. Gali too, to a lesser extent.

edit: ha ha, I'm watching grass grow
