I would guess that Ground Zeroes is essentially the "Virtuous Mission" for MGSV and The Phantom Pain will be the "Operation Snake Eater". I'm going to assume that Ground Zeroes takes place in 1986-87 and Phantom Pain takes place in 1995-96.

Edit: Okay. After looking some stuff up the starting point is immediately following Peace Walker so GZ will be 1974 while TPP will take place during 1983.

I just want to see the part where Big Boss recruits characters like Shoot Gunner, Dirty Duck, and Running Man to Outer Heaven. It just makes me laugh every time I think about how all these games have Big Boss as the legendary soldier but then in Metal Gear 1 and 2 he hires all these crazy dudes and gets killed twice, the second time by an aerosol can + lighter combo.

There is a rumor going around that this might be like MGS2, in which you start off as BB but then switch to another character after a little bit of game play. The reason people think this, is that during the trailer, when BB and someone else (forget their name) are lying down on some hospital beds and talking, when the guy who's name I don't know points at the screen and says "What about him?" Implying that the scene was from a different characters POV.

I think it's at least gonna end with Big Boss.

The Phantom Pain takes place in 1984.

Which is very shortly before Solid Snake starts getting involved in the military.

If there's a time skip of, say two years

we could very well see big boss recruiting solid

And then Hayter makes a surprise appearance as the 15-year-old Snake who somehow has the voice of a career smoker.

I hope the end reveal is that you're just some jack booty who ends up being fulton'd in the middle of an important mission.

David Hayter's not doing Snake's voice this time around. I'm not sure how I feel about this. The trailer looks cool though.

So long as it's Richard Doyle doing Big Boss' voice, I'll be pop flyin'. I'm really not sure what to make of the Big Boss looking character in the Phantom Pain part of the story though. I'm getting less and less sold on him actually being Big Boss since to my knowledge he didn't lose an arm until after he fought Solid Snake in 1995.

Okay. So it is indeed Big Boss. Still curious as to how they're going to go about changing up some of the lore to make it fit though.

I honestly hope not. I want to play as Big Boss from start to finish, seeing how he creates Outer Heaven from Metal Gear 1. As well, I don't think that fans would appreciate Kojima using the bait-and-switch a second time, especially after the adverse reaction people had to it in MGS2. I've also seen segments like that in other games or works of fiction; parts where you're seeing what's happening to the main characters through the eyes of an unknown party. The only reason I would give up control of Big Boss is if we get to play as Ocelot, if that guy in the duster is really him.

I also hope that Kojima will not penalize you for going all murder-pop flyin' this time around, both gameplay-wise and not counting against you in end-game ratings. It could lead in to Big Boss partially earning his status as bad guy, the other half being how Cipher set him up. Also, BB is shown firing his gun, supposedly at real dudes, while escaping the exploding Mother Base.
