If anyone is still rustled off about Samus' reaction to Ridley, I found a post on a Metroid fan forum that illustrates that this isn't the first time she's reacted stupidly to his presence:

IUNIVERSE wrote:
You say it is bizarre for Samus Aran just to freeze up like she did in Other M against Ridley, but she has done this to an extent in every Ridley encounter of the series (excluding Super Metroid since it lacked cutscenes).

I'll start with Metroid Zero Mission, the remake of the original Metroid. This is Samus' first encounter with Ridley in the series. When she is about to exit the room where Ridley is marked to be fought on the map, a short cutscene is shown. In this cutscene, Samus can be seen appearing shocked by Ridley's sudden appearence and looks angry as he is seen swooping towards her via the image on her visor. Despite being angry though, she still becomes frozen enough for Ridley to take advantage and gain a first attack on her with his fire breath attack.

Now, Metroid Prime has Samus encountering Meta-Ridley three times based on appearences. The first is in the Frigate Orpheon, and what does Samus do as she watches the menace free itself? She just stands there, and one could say that this freeze on her part led her to ultimately lose track of Meta-Ridley (since he had a head start on her). The second appearence Meta-Ridley has is in Phendrana Drifts, and again Samus is frozen still as Meta-Ridley flies over. The final appearence is the actual boss encounter at the Artifact Temple, and before players can control Samus there is yet another cutscene. What does Samus do? She basically stands in place, and only ducks slightly to avoid Meta-Ridley's bombing attack.

She does aim her arm cannon up at him, but doesn't shoot, and even puts it down when he flies back up again. On his second fly over of the Temple, he sends out bombs directly at Samus who is frozen to the spot she's at. Sure, she ducked and moved her arm to try and shield herself, but she still gets hurt as she makes that grunt noise. If Samus isn't frozen up by his appearence then she should have made an effort to effective dodge his bomb attack. That doesn't happen though.

Metroid Prime 3 is the best example of how frozen Samus becomes when faced with Ridley. In the cutscene, she's in Generator C and rolls out on a ledge. Then there's Ridley rushing down towards her. What does Samus do? She stands there and shoots upwards at him. Shooting upwards wouldn't be so bad if she tried to actually fire off shots that would have a chance against Meta-Ridley, like a Charge Shot. While she is firing at Meta-Ridley, she is frozen in place and allows herself to be taken down into the massive shaft of the Generator and through a sheet of glass along the way. In the end, if Rundas was not there, Samus had a high probability of dying in the Generator due to the fact she was unable to move to dodge Meta-Ridley when he dived at her.

I know it was not mentioned by sirboulevard, but the Omega Ridley encounter does show signs of a similar weakness in Samus Aran.

I will start off by saying Samus' reactions are a bit better in the cutscene, but not by much. As soon as Omega Ridley comes into the main chamber of the Leviathan, and as he flies about, Samus can be seen glued to her position. She does move to dodge Omega Ridley's dive bomb attack. As the creature moves towards Samus, she just slowly backs away. No arm cannon pointing at him yet despite how close he is to her. She has a good reaction to his fire breath attack, then finally points her arm cannon at Omega Ridley. Better reaction overall, as I said, but there are points in the scene that show her being frozen and not taking action.

There you have it, Samus shows similar showings of the same fear and freeze up she has in Other M in all Metroid games that have cutscenes with Ridley. It's really not new in Other M, just more fleshed out.

Meeeeeehhhhhhh
I've said this before and I'll say it again.
Even without the whole ridley thing the story is still so terrible in Other M.
In order
zero mission, that really doesnt seem like a freak out, in anyway, it seems more like an "oh shit it's ridley" like she reacts to every boss.

HOWEVER the metroid primes 1 and 3's those are a bit more like "oh shit, it's ridley" and there seems to be a bit of panic
HOWEVER AGAIN, she does not freeze up totally, she does something.
She isn't just paralyzed in fear, she gets over it and starts fighting him.
Especially with the last cutscene, after the initial reaction, she dodges out of the way and is ready to take the fucker down.

For the record, I AM trying to be the devil's advocate here.
But only on the story for the most part, the gameplay is alright, I just don't like it.

But there's opinions, and there's just poor storytelling and unneeded character development.

I found the game to be quite enjoyable, despite the whole Samus backstory bogus.

Ah, Metroid Return of Samus is not the best in the series. The view can be tricky at times.

I fail at this game.

I love it, but this is my very first metroid game. I freak out during it because of the extremelymassivlyoverlyhardenimiesthatshowupinpairs.
I think I've died at least 15 times.

Apparently this game should only take 12 hours, but I got it on Thursday and still haven't beaten it. :C

Talk about Mass Wild Guessing.
Samus acts nothing like she does in those games as she does in Other M. She's mainly like "Oh shit!". In Prime 1 and 3, she's shooting at the bastard. Instead of panicking like an idiot.

I really hate those double-headed dinosaur things that can fucking eat you and destroy you in one hit in the Bio-dome or whatever.

I don't know if you guys ever read the Metroid prequel comic, but Ridley fucking MURDERED HER FAMILY IN FRONT OF HER EYES

You would THINK that, especially after killing him several times, you would freeze up too seeing the murderer of your parents suddenly reappear shooting flames and shit at you.

Yeah, and she freezes up in other games too. The point is, in the other games, she's not a submissive wimp. That she pretty much is in Other M

I like the change up in the way Samus gets a hold of power ups. I like the backstory in relation to Samus' involvement with Adam Malkovich (who is hinted toward in Metroid Fusion). I like the Ridley life cycle thing.

Overall the game does well creating a sense of sci-fi-horror, which is how I would classify the Metroid series. Though I think there are too many instances where they make excuses to show Samus in her Zero Suit.

The gameplay does have some holes in it. There have been instances where I've been locked into first-person view and have wondered if there's a problem with the Wiimote before realising there's some tiny nigh-impossible to locate object I'm supposed to scan in order for a cutscene to play.

Why the pretense? Why not just play the cutscene?

Overall the game has been good, though the number of times I've had to continue for making one_little_mistake sometimes becomes irritating.

Finally started this game a few days ago despite having it since launch day (wanted to finish Mafia 2 first, and WoW likes to eat up my time).

Enjoying it so far, wish I could've shot that
little white fuzzy thing that was chowing down on the bug queen after I killed it.
