On my first runthrough, I had saved Tali, but the option didn't come up. There must be more to it.

There might be.
I didn't have enough Paragon or Renegade to make a choice. But if you stand up for her and save her from exile, I hear she calls the fleet and commands them to stand down.

The actual choice is pretty complex in needs for execution. Tali must be an Admiral, Legion must be alive, it helps if you didn't blow up the Heretics, and it helps if you gave Tali the geth data from ME1 (not by much).

After that, you just need REALLY high paragon/renegade, and say yes to Legion uploading the data.

Also, do every side mission related to Rannoch before going on to the main one. They're needed in order for Quarians to understand the Geth's viewpoint. Without them, they'll still be stuck in seeing the Geth as monsters.

I actually played it, and it DID have me tearing up with happiness. In fact I flat-out cried. BioWare, you are revived in my eyes.

After watching them though, I say synthesis is my favourite.

Tbh I was content with the original synthesis ending. This just made it better. Also the 4th ending is kinda hilarious
