How does one actually enter high-level play?
I always hear about it but never figured out how to find it.

lobbies are a good place to start if you're not ready to make a ugc team

Get into competitive, start out with some lobbies to get used to it, try to get a team together if you can.

don't play medic on your first few sessions bc you'll mess up and everyone will hate you

I tried doing competitive TF2 before I stopped playing it; all the likable people who wanted to do competitive stuff on a team were already on a team, and everyone else was either extremely arrogant or 13 years old (bodaciously, not as an insult).

I just got to the point where joining public servers was not fun anymore; really wish they would at least implement some sort of in game matchmaking at least which uses the highlander format/penalties for leaving but that will never happen.

That would require Valve caring about competitive TF2, so fat chance.

Also the ones I hate are giant black box soldiers. Mostly because nobody fucking dodges and they heal 1000 HP per rocket that hits.

Uh, what if I have done that?

This is pretty much how I got the Sniper achieve for killing a cloaked spy. The game hadn't started yet so I was screwing around by jump spinning and then with something like two seconds left to go I panicked and whipped back around to face the enemy gate and popped off a shot without scoping. It headshotted a cloaked spy and killed instantly. The whole thing was so improbable he contacted me afterwards to congratulate me.
