Jesus this Robot destruction is really hit or miss.
Most of the matches are either one sided, or just filled with engies.
Maybe it's just me but I keep joining teams where nobody sticks together, nobody uses voice, and the other team is full of scouts or engies.
I've had maybe one good match in all the games I've played, it's ridiculous.

TF2 isn't really a game you use voice chat with.

Spies lie in wait for you to type though.

It's not a game where you type either.
You just go.

But you need to convey important enemy placements to your team quickly, unless I'm the only one without psychic powers now.

people who dont type are SO BORING

like yall talkin shit about the 24/7 nucleus server when really we do stuff ranging from vulgar peanut butter debates to discovering that most of the people in the server are actually either gay or asexual

most of the time we just smack talk each other tho. i like to call people casuals

tf2 is 100% a game you voice chat with

just not in-game, you get a mumble server or skype call

I rarely benefit from voice chat gameplay-wise. The rare person that uses correctly it will promptly be ignored by everyone else.
For me it's just common sense.
Do we need a medic out here? Yes. Do we have a medic? No. Switch to medic.
Is there a sentry? Yes. Do we have a spy? Yes, we have 3. Do we have a demoman? No. Switch to demoman.
etc.
If I actually played with people I know, maybe it would be different

Discussions are fun an all, but sometimes I like to play TF2.

hence, use a mumble or skype call

it's a pretty big factor that in-game voice chat is usually all-talk enabled, so everyone can hear it, so using it as a way to communicate to your team is sort of out

just because you've never needed it doesn't make it not a big part of the game, almost all higher-level play requires it to be any sort of efficient. calling out enemy health, giving directions, alerting to sentry positions, all that is much better done by talking.

1) Skype uses too much bandwidth.
2) Random people on a pub server aren't going to want to join a stupid Skype call.

You people seem to be under the impression that I play this with friends or something.

Voice chat is absolutely essential in higher level MvM missions, as well as any serious play. Casual server hopping and normal playing around though text chat is sufficient.

If you are not instantaneously feeding important info to your team in advanced MvM missions you will fail it. Scouts need to say when they die so their team knows to pick up any cheddar drops they can until he gets back to the front, players need to call out for medic revival, since it's easy to lose teammates in the chaos, and it's way more easy to agree on whether or not to fall back (and on mannhattan if you should let the robots get the point) with voice chat.
