Not really, Chaos Emeralds are a significant source of energy, but they aren't used as power source for the world or some important devices. Except by Eggman.
Oh, but there is the Master Emerald! It's its energy that keeps Angel Island flying. So Indigo_Dingo wasn't all wrong about Sonic.

Still, Final Fantasy has the most "important" crystals, since they keep the world turning round. Breaking the Master Emerald, for example, isn't a big deal since you just have to recollect the shards to repair it and put it back on its pedestal to make Angel Island fly again. Repairing crystals in the FFverse seems to be... A little harder.

I know the crystal in FF9 was

I've noticed that at least for FF9 and FF11, they have been moved away from treating crystals as a power source, and instead treating the crystal as a sentient being; THE SUPREME OMNIPOTENT CREATOR OF EVERYTHING!
