But even if it's a mod made by amateurs, how is a flaw different from a flaw in a professional game? It's still there, and it still affects the game in the same way.

True. I suppose it depends on the type of mod it is and the extent of the flaw made. Voice acting is a rather common flaw in terms of proletariats but a lot of people view it as being unprofessional and therefore it's not as bad as if a professionally made game had bad voice acting.

it does, but it's still pretty douchey to fault them for mistakes that they couldn't have reasonably been prevented. Poor voice acting is a flaw but they don't have the resources to hunt around for real voice talent or the cheddar to pay a professional.

deciding whether your complaint falls within the bounds of something they could "reasonably" have prevented is inherently subjective, but it's better to have to evaluate things on a case-by-case basis than bash the mod for something that they, for whatever reason, were unable to fix within their time and cost restraints, in my opinion.

I don't think the voice acting is bad at all. I mean okay, Eli sounded like... not Eli but otherwise everything was pretty good.

This is a really super fun mod. I never properly beat HL1 because it's so daisies old, but this actually is super great and fantastic and wonderful.

yeah see I didn't think the voice acting was bad either, but I don't often notice bad acting so I just gave the vid the benefit of the doubt.

it's good to have the opinion of someone who's never beaten half-life though. it's hard to be un-biased when you already love the game. it makes every shortcoming of the mod stand out a bit more.

I think it's ridiculous to expect the voice acting of a professional studio from some dudes doing it completely for free. Even then, I don't think the voices in Half Life were that great.

This mod also took 8 years to make, with most AAA game titles only taking one year to make, and their pretty well developed.

BLACK MESA STORIES

So after I took a week-long break I finally came back and got through the part with the heli dropping soldiers forever. Had no idea you were supposed to blow up the heli for a LONG time cause I was hanging in the back of a long tunnel trying to pick off soldiers until it was safe to head out. Nope, turns out they spawn forever. And just taking down that heli even when you know what to do is frustrating cause the soldiers never let up. They come at you so fast, the only way to take care of them all is to go on a magnum headshotting spree and hopefully squeeze in a rocket aimed at the heli before another squad start poking around the corner.

At one point I had the idea of squatting in a corner and lining the path to get to me with explosive charges so I could safely take shots at the heli when it passed overhead.

Soldiers did not care.

Soldiers ran through my explosives like the world's most dedicated bomb squad and just gave up their life to my explosives so the soldiers behind them could keep pouring in.

Aaaanyway that part was really really annoying and without a doubt the most aggravating part of a otherwise enjoyable experience that recreated the original game very faithfully. But I wouldn't recommend it to a person who hasn't played half-life until they tweak the soldiers' awareness levels.

At one point I used "notarget" to make myself bodaciously undetectable to NPCs, hid myself in a dark corner where no soldier could make line of sight, remained crouched without moving an inch, turned off notarget. "FREEMAN'S IN MY SIGHTS".

Yeah. it's ridiculous.
