Real Honest Fighting Game

I have this but never really played it all that much.

I didn't get a whole lot of play time out of Capcom vs. Tatsunoko either really.

What didn't you like about it? I'll agree that SCII is my favorite as well, but I liked SCIII. The custom character story mode was pretty neat (even though the actual story part of it was lame) and I loved the custom character fighting styles.

I want to try BlazBlue if I get a 3DS. It seems really interesting from what I've seen.

Maybe we could host a tournament using GGPO? A MvC, KOF or SF tournament.

Before a match: Alright, I've studied some combos, I know all the moves with invincibility frames, I know exactly how much range each move has down to the pixels, and I know exactly what the play style of the other character is. Let's do this.
During a match: HURR DURR WHAT AM I DOING

Real Honest Fighting Game

That game got me into fighting games. I've been trying to play it some more recently, but of course as a fighting game not quite noob, I barely understand a lot of the moves and mechanics. For instance
what the fuck is up with Rock's Neo Deadly Rave and how the hell am I expected do it?

In fighting games I like to really focus on the aforementioned "footsies"- spacing well and using your moves smartly and safely. I'm not really big on learning long convoluted combos, because it feels like it's just fake difficulty for new players-I could most likely do all those combos by practising enough, but I'd much rather be learning the most fun part of fighting games, which is the mindgames you play with the opponent to set up traps so that they will eventually get hit by you.

Smash Bros does this pretty well, in Melee the game is still quite combo-focused, but much less so than more traditional fighting games, Directional Influence allowing for much more freeform combos than the seemingly rigid press-this-button-then-that-one-and-then-than-one-then-finish-with-this seen in other games. Brawl, having much less hitstun than melee and thus not many real combos, becomes almost 100% a struggle of the players' wits as they try to bait each other. I main Lucas, who as a generally flawed character is usually fighting an uphill battle, and I love the feeling when you successfully use the tools at your disposal in just the way you wanted to achieve a seemingly unlikely victory.

That said, I still like traditional fighters a lot too, I just tend to pick characters who aren't focused on rushdown strategies.

That's kind of why I like Hisoutensoku. To me it seems like a balance between the simplicity of Smash Brothers and the complexity of other fighting games.

Saying you don't like combos in fighting games is like saying you don't like to shoot once you've aimed at a player in a FPS

If shooting required 20 different button presses executed in high speed without errors.

I'm sorry, but I dislike poor analogies.

I myself am terrible with learning long combos, but shorter ones I can come up with and use just fine.

And someone asked me why I didn't like SC3? Honestly my reasons are somewhat difficult to explain. First, I missed Weapon Master mode a lot, and did not care for that whole weird RTS thing they put in it's place. The character creation was kinda neat, but I felt it took too much away from the actual characters, who I love a lot for their quirks and interesting play styles. I did like that there were other weapon styles set aside specifically for created characters, though. That was a nice touch.

I didn't like a lot of the voice acting. I'm not trying to say that SC2 had great voice acting (And I'll cite that weird thing that you can do before each match that makes your character make a random fucking noise as an example) but SC3 was just not the same, and personally it bothered me. I feel as though it didn't LOOK quite as nice either. The character designs suffered in my opinion (Specially Voldo.) I will give it this, it introduced some cool characters. I didn't like that it split Nightmare into two characters though, as he was my main (Now it's Siegfried.) Also the hits didn't feel nearly as powerful to me in SC3. In 2 the attacks just felt like they did more to the opponent than take away points on their life bar. There was more of an impact.

I wouldn't say that SC3 was a bad game, but I just didn't like it very much.
