Beat Hazard is an excellent shooter.
I bought it twice.

On the Newgrounds page for the original Meat Boy, the makers of the game wrote,
Quote:
This is NOT Super Meat Boy!

Its simply the flash prototype that Super Meat Boy was based off of.
Anyone else think this is kind of... I dunno, pretentious?

Meat Boy was a very successful flash game. It was made into a "real" game (read: game that costs cheddar) because it was successful. But now that there's a newfangled version of the game with harder levels and more doodads, they call this version a prototype?

Three or so years ago, all the "indie" games were free. What's different now that warrants slapping a price tag on them, besides slightly better graphics?

The price tags are "slapped on", as you so kindly put it, because they are put up on a major online retail service, i.e. Steam or Xbox Live. If they're there, they can be promoted big-time. The only problem with that is that Xbox Live doesn't allow you to put anything on the Marketplace for free (save for some very small exceptions), and Steam isn't exactly keen on the idea, either. Either way, not only does this enable the indie games to get publicity, but it can also make them moolah.

Here are a few indie games I have been playing as of late:
Aquaria (demo) - all I have to say is AMAZING! MUST GET FULL VERSION!

Noitu Love 2 (also demo) - hard to play with a touchpad, but dayum that is one fine game I must get.

Bonesaw the game - BONESAW IS READYYYYYYYY! I gotta beat it some time...

Indie Brawl - imagine the Smash Bros. games but with the stars of indie games. (still being made y'all)

And here are the ones I have and still do play:
Iji, 5 days/7 days/notes/6 days, Big Building Boom Blues

That sounds like it would be the coolest Indie game ever.
To think I was blown away by finding Commander Video in Super Meat boy.

The "easiest" and best to begin with is Touhou 8, Imperishable Night. Touhou 7 and 7.5, Perfect Cherry Blossom and Immaterial and Missing Power, are a bit harder, and Touhou 6, The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, is the most challenging of the three.
I'd say begin with the 6 if you're used to shooter games and games in general, and begin with the 8 if you're not.

The three games have input lags though, but if you wanna play them, PM me and I'll send you a file that removes the input lag.

I'll download them when I get my new PC.
