Traveling SHOULD take skill. What fun is it when there is no danger in the world? Just hop on your mount and take a minute to go from one end of the world to the other without no obstacles? LAME!
In Everquest, traveling was dangerous and time consuming, and that was fun because you actually had to think and put effort into what you did. You couldn't just run out into the world and expect everything to go your way, a high level monster might jump out at you and KILL you because you couldn't handle it because you weren't paying attention. Death actually MEANT something, too, you were punished for failing at the game. You lost experience, lose enough and you go down a level, if you didn't get your corpse back you would lose your items! That makes banks actually useful, instead of just more space to put crap! Instead of carrying all of your coin with you, you bank it because you might lose it (and it's heavy, copper weighs a lot and it doesn't automatically convert to silver, you could have a million copper and you'd be weight down to the point you'd be crushed to death). All of these little details click together nicely and create a fun and challenging experience. In WoW, death is meaningless. You lose a few gold to repair and have to run for a minute (while you're completely invulnerable because you're a ghost) to get back to your body. Boring and it isn't challenging. Because death is meaningless, you don't care if you die, so you don't care about any danger that might exist. Dieing in an MMORPG = you fail, you should care when you fail so you can improve yourself.
See how WoW is so easy mode about travelling? When you're up in the air, there is ZERO danger and you get to your destination way too fast. When you're on the ground, there is barely any danger. You're in a level appropriate zone, you can easily outrun mobs until they give up on beating you and continue on your merry, dangerlous way. The only danger that might actually be DANGEROUS are in zones that are higher in your level, which is easily avoidable.... just don't go there doofus! In EQ, same-level zones are actually DANGEROUS because mobs will try to kill you until you or it dies, or you run out of the zone, and mobs aren't completely pathetic like WoW mobs.
I want an MMO like old EQ again.... those were the days. No EZmode, everything was perfect.
