There's a more mundane explanation. The chat input is on a 30 second delay, so unless you were able to predict that the evolution was going to take place then it wasn't going to be stopped. As soon as the evolution window shows up it's already too late.

The actual explanation is sometimes the chat lags for like 20 seconds and none of the messages go through and this just happened to occur when the pokémon evolved
