Demoknights are the one exception to my "Melee Fight" rule.

Seeing as they are BUILT to win melee fights, it seems appropriate to shoot them.

I usually keep my gun out seeing as I'm terrible at using melee weapons.

Then again if somebody made it to my melee range and I'm not Pyro, I'm probably dead anyway.

In pubs, they're actually at a disadvantage because no random crits.

I've smashed in demoknights with my pan so often I renamed it "The pan is mightier than the sword".

If it's obvious they're going melee only, I'll go along with it.

I'd use an SMG or Shot/Scattergun, but for the most part I'd be better off with melee anyways.

Except with how fast a TF2 match proceeds it's very hard to understand you interrupted anything. As soon as an enemy pops on-screen it's just lock and kill.

Particularly if there's a Sniper or Scout involved. The Sniper you assume is going "I'm useless to anybody but I still don't wanna die" and the Scout is thinking "Aiming's too hard much better to flail around wildly and hope something connects."

Honestly, if the server starts trending towards a trollsy "hey guys lets have an all-pyro all-melee battle!" then yeah you better join that and don't be the guy that blows everyone up with stickies.

Of course, depends on how cheesy the members of that server are feeling.

fun story one time i was on a low-gravity orange server (no other wacky stuff, no rtd or crazy stuff) and i took out a bottle as demoman and started just bashing heads and no one could even fucking scratch me it was the greatest thing. i ended up killing a bunch of the other team repeatedly with the bottle crits. it was probably the most fun i've had on tf2.

if you're looking for a code of honor for melee in your shooty game you're probably not going to find it. while melee can be a fun goof thing it's definitely not the focus of the game and thus isn't necessarily what a lot of people are looking for in their team forts, and will voice their favored playstyle by practicing it, and shooting the dude coming at them with a one-hit killing sword/bottle/shovel/bust/whatever. plus melee's a viable option even if the other guy is shooting so it's not that much of a big deal.
