I dunno I kinda like this dragon guy.

No, you just get an immediate ending and have to start from the last checkpoint aka the checkpoint from right before you made a choice

Dragon's Dogma is arriving on Tuesday, think I'll go with Magic Archer or Spellsword.

Change vocations whenever you max one out, you'll be a lot better off doing that earlier rather than later.
Since of course you gain different stats depending on your Vocation.

How's melee in this game? Is it viable or would I need to get some super gear to stand a chance against the tougher monsters/casters?

Melee's just as good as magic. It depends on how you use it. Striders and the related classes can't take as many hits but they deal LOTS of damage. Warriors and such use shields so damage is mitigated.

Awesome. Though I'm also wondering how the AI is and whether I'll need to go healer because they're dumb as bricks like in Dragon Age. And is there an achievement for throwing someone off a cliff? I had a ton of fun with the Grab feature in the demo. The mage didn't appreciate it much though.

The AI for pawns is some of the best AI I've ever seen in a game, provided you set them up right using the chair of knowledge

There is no cliff throwing achievement you lose whatever pawn you throw in and have to go to the rift to get them back, if you rented the pawn for cheddar, good job on wasting your Rift Crystals! Haha.
Don't have a pawn as a sorcerer though, when they get to higher levels and you teach them the really cool spells, like summoning meteors, twisters, and ice spirals, they'll seriously just stand there attempting to cast it on a Goblin.
Other than that they're really useful.

Just be careful with the chair of knowledge. My pawn at one point would absolutely not attack anything unless the arisen was attacked. So most of the time, she just stood there and stared at the sky. Was REALLY annoying.

Oh no, I meant like picking up a civilian or a guard and chucking them in the well.

Picking up anybody that isn't your pawn gets you arrested, as far as I know.
Throwing things is a bit tricky though.

They can't arrest me if I chuck them in the well. Sort of like how in Skyrim they can't arrest me if I keep FUS RO DAH'ing them away.

One will just walk up to you and lock you in conversation, you can't fight it.

There's no option to resist arrest?
