Huh, with that long set up time and the constant updates you mentioned Kamak, it seems like consoles have lost one of their biggest advantages over PC, namely plug-n-play.

Well, the 5 GB update takes the software from 1.1 to 2.0 and brings over a half dozen big applications with it, including Miiverse. The advantages of making it an update and not an on console standard (at this point at least, I hope later shipments have it) is it gives them more time to wire out bugs and test out things like their moderation of posts. Unfortunately, yes, it takes some amount of set up, but you could technically skip over some things. The Wii U is playable without the update, you just won't have Miiverse or Wii-compatibility, among a few other features. Plus, bugs in 1.1 that were patched in 2.0 are there.

And I'm going to venture that the updates for the games at this point are to connect them to Miiverse, so if you don't update, I'm sure they won't update.

All in all, it's still much less frustrating than the PS3, namely because it doesn't take as long downloading, and the downloads are are huge compared to the bite-sized downloads of games.

I'm not saying it's for the better or the worse that consoles are now relying more on patching, just saying that it eliminates one of the previously big differences.

I've played and beaten 20 missions for the Metroid mini game. All mini games I played are surprisingly solid.

I'd say it doesn't change too terribly much though. PC installation can become pretty complicated, especially when you get into the technicals of moving files, having to save them in certain places, applying DLC sometimes becomes a technical thing, etc.

At least with this, it may be more similar in the sense of downloading, installing, and patching before you can even play it, but nothing is customizable. You don't choose where to save your data (except telling it to put it on the SD card), you don't have to deal with applying updates, or having to worry about it installing wrong and having to uninstall and then install it a second time.

So consoles are still less complicated and more user-friendly than PC.

Got an update on my issue with the Wii U.

Apparently my screen protector was the reason why the touch screen wasn't working. Even though I had it on yesterday and it worked. Apparently something about it made the pad think it was being touched in multiple places when the stylus touched down, so it wouldn't respond.

And whatever issue was going on with the gamepad's buttons not working on the menu last night seems to have cleared up, so I guess it was a loading thing with the Miiverse or something.

Also, the way Miiverse works seems to be a combination of Facebook (you can "yeah" people's posts, and if someone you're following "yeahs" a post, it'll show up in your feed on what they do), twitter (most everything is spur of the moment short comments, and you can follow people without friending them), reddit (yeahs work like upvotes, each game has a community, and each community is just a bunch of posts that you can click to go into "threads"), and an imageboard (people post reaction images to things (yes, people are drawing rage faces and memes in general. A lot.), make multi-page comics, have conversations, and stuff like that).

You can make a post, people (including yourself) can comment on it (so if you have a story to tell, through pictures, perhaps) you can do so (I've already tested this out by posting a comic about the Luigi's Mansion game), and there's a lot of different features that come together into a nice package.

So essentially it has a bunch of social features that people knock other consoles for using, but they just use the Nintendo Network IDs instead of social networks like Facebook and Twitter?

Yup, and it's heavily moderated, and focused entirely on what you're doing with the console.

So about the only place you can get away with not discussing games is in the Netflix community, because you can discuss shows there.

They're really good about taking down the "fuck you faggot" posts in under 5 minutes. And otherwise, the majority of posts being taken down are pictures of very obvious Non-Nintendo characters, like drawings of Stewie from Family Guy.

4chan has decided to troll and report any use of memefaces as breaking copyright. For now, the posts are being taken down, but if they keep doing this, they can get in trouble for misreporting under the Miiverse terms and conditions.

Also, keep in mind, if you're going to make posts on Miiverse, the name of your Mii is what's used, not your Nintendo Network ID. Shouldn't be a problem for some people (you could always set your user Mii to be something other than your normal Mii), but it's a bit odd that you don't just use the Network ID with a picture of your Mii for posting.

Since memefaces aren't videogame-related, aren't their reports correct?

They relate to the situation at hand though, things like "Why can't I hold all of these Triforces" about the Zelda game on Nintendoland makes a connection.

The thing is, they're reporting them for copyright infringement, and with enough reports, the post is automatically taken down for review. And that's what they're doing. Once proletariats get around and see "Oh, this person is just using one of those memes with stick figures/stock art" then it can potentially be seen as abuse of the report features.

I think it would have to be somewhat more obvious of a meme/joke for the proletariats to get it, but it could be taken down and put under review if enough people report it.

Reporting that as copyright infringement would be hard though, considering reports don't seem to let you do anything besides pick a category. Copyright violations might be different, but I've yet to report one of those.

Also, seems like the update might not be as intrusive as previously thought.

That's still really dumb.
It should ask, like, "Do you want a faster update that will prevent you from playing, or a slower one that will be in the background?" or something like that, if it can.
