I always figured Link and Tetra told the crew what happened aboard the ship, even though it sounded outrageous.

My favorite theory about PH (hur-dur theoryfag) is that the Ocean King does in fact exist, and the Ghost Ship was a manifestation of his will to spirit away possible helpers to aid in the termination of his parasitic mental disease, Bellum. Bellum is derived from cerebellum, looks like a bunch of wavy neurons, and its yellow plant-body looks like a brainstem...
