I honestly don't know which Animal Crossing to recommend if you want one now.
The Gamecube one is awesome, but it's very unfinished compared to later ones. For instance, the game runs on Acres (which later games have, but without a transition between) and the top row always has a Train station in part 3/5, a dump, the shop, Town hall, and a pattern store (which is useless, really, unless you like making pixel art for clothing) randomly distributed among the rest. In Row 2, collumn 3 is where the 4 houses ALWAYS reside. There's almost no reason to leave the top half of your town except to find the police station and fish. Not to mention it can only do local "multiplayer" which in this case means "one person puts a copy of their person on slot B memory card, and sticks it in the other person's gamecube to play in their town while person 2 watches"
The DS one has arguably the worst graphics of them all, due to a lack of anti-aliasing, and the general power of the DS. This doesn't really impact much, though. It added a LOT from the Gamecube one, the one that sticks out most to me being separate clothes, hat and hair. The town is almost devoid of grass, though (when I generate new ones it's small patches of grass with seas of dirt, and not vice versa.) which makes it look crummy, in my opinion. Everyone lives in one house, which is stuck somewhere random based on a question at the beginning. It gets huge though, since it's the only game so far to have side rooms. Also added were lots of furniture, some villagers, and multiplayer that actually ended up being MULTIPLAYER.
The Wii is my favorite, though. It's like the DS version, but with improved graphics (again, probably due mostly to anti-aliasing and a smidge better polygon count, but nothing too huge. Get used to one game though, and the others will look weird) more furniture and villagers, better generation (I got a fucking ISLAND in the bottom of my town once.) and the city, of course. Other than that it's not too different from the DS. My only peeve with this one is the absurdity of grass erosion. Play for 2 weeks and your town is a desert. Never run for 3 months, and you're halfway back. This is the ONLY thing I cheat for, regrowing my grass.
The 3DS one looks awesome too, and you're more than the one guy doing all the work for no reason, you're the mayor. They brought back the train and added a bunch of other stuff, from what I can see, so I, personally, would hold out.
