I've heard mixed reviews about this game, I kinda want to get it just to try it. Is there some kind of demo or trial version so I don't have to buy the game in order to try it?

Yes, there's a 14 day/10 hour trial, which means you can try the game for free for 14 days, but in those 14 days you may not exceed 10 hours of playing time. I strongly recommend you start out with Factions or Nightfall though; Prophecies might be the original, but Factions and Nightfall have far better tutorials. Prophecies just puts you in this fantasy kingdom and leaves it up to you how you're gonna learn the game then, whereas Factions begins in a monastery that turns out to be a school for learning how to defeat the Dragon Emperor's bodyguard. Nightfall makes you start out teaching a couple of recruits, but fortunately your character appears to know more about the game than you yourself. It's a funny experience. Until Kormir kills you to demonstrate a Resurrection Shrine.

So... Does it always take a really long time to load up the areas or is it just the first time?

Just the first time.

It gets better/faster each area you load.

Just downloaded the trial version (can't afford full), my character is Electronic Goat btw.
And GODDAISIES this is taking a long time to load. I'm at 6%

Wait does loading count towards the 10 hour limit?

I hope not! It's playtime, right? Not pause time or anything?
And as to be expected, my internet connection goes out during the loading process! But then the game sends me back to the character creation screen. I do everything like I had done last time, and then it says the name Electronic Goat is taken. So I go back to the main screen AND I HAVE 4 FREE CHARACTER SLOTS. ELECTRONIC GOAT IS NOT THERE, BUT THE NAME IS TAKEN.
AUGH.

Which secondary class goes best with Ranger? Now I know next to nothing about the game so I'm going to make an educated guess and say either Monk for healies or Necromancer for more minions (is that right?)

I went with monk just for the unlimited rez and healing
