Text Adventures Thread
The Interactive Original
ByPlayingWithBelgian (1995)
Release 1 / Serial number 910123 / AwkwardZombie v6.31 Library 6/11 S
Hello, this is ThatBelgianDude and I've decided to propose something.
Text adventures were a big hit when computers were made public, as there was no way to make games with fancy graphics back then, so games had to be good at telling a story or making the player think to hold their attention. Almost three decades later, I still like these games, and have hours of fun with them.
Now, the consequence for failure is often death, although Text Adventures also lets you get through the plot without a full score. (this score being raised as you reach important areas, and most likely, gather treasure).
Fortunately, save games exist. I will be restoring to a previous save if we die or if we get the game into an unwinnable state (Once I realize it myself). The "we", of course is intentional; like most text adventure LPs, and as a way to make this thing interactive, I will be relying on comments to direct me. Post a reply indicating an action, either in words or commands (such as GO NORTH), and I will do my best to accomplish it (if it's possible. please don't say "win the game", I won't be able to do that.)
If you've played the game of the time before, please do not provide the solutions to any puzzles you remember unless things get really really stuck somewhere; it's better if people have to solve it on their own. Please do feel free to show some weird stuff or kill everyone, though.
"Jump off that cliff, test those legs"
These, as you might expect, are somewhat old games. Most text adventures predates concepts like "usability" and "player testing" and "not making puzzles that depend completely on random number generators for no good reason". This is what made these games shine back in the day (when I wasn't even alive, those were the good times). Although, in some, you don't see quite as many instadeaths as you'll find in some other games (The Hitchiker Guide's To Galaxy being one of them. There's so many ways to die it's wonderful), but even if the some we are most likely to play are "easier" (they are not easy, you just can't die as much) there are still many entertaining ways to fail. Shall we explore some?

Are you sure you want to restart? y
To sum it up, we'll choose a game, and I'll "play" through the game before hand, knowing how to complete it. I'll, however, not show you how to complete it, but let you guys suffer as you try to figure out the puzzle.
I'll also give some informations about it as we go on, such as software, IF commands, backstory and such, so I'll do my research about it. I'll only meddle with puzzles or progress when things get really ugly-looking, and other than that, just RESTORE when we die or make the game unwinnable.
Basically, that's it. If anyone wants to suggest the first game we could play, that's great, otherwise, we're going with a favourite of mine.
And, let's begin, shall we?

The room is pitch black, you are likely to be eaten by a grue.
(About my other LPs, I had to take a break from them. I'll begin uploading my videos after some stuff clears up in my life)
