So there are a couple of guys over at Starmen.net working together to make a sequel to Mother 3... or another installment in the EarthBound/Mother series. This is a blog about the status of the game.

http://mother4.dcmsoftware.net/

Here are some screenshots I found on it:

Image
"The street-smart ruffian."

Image
"Chase executes a PSI maneuver! What could it be called I wonder..."

Image
"Well, that is the saying."

Image
"Yep its some snake. It looks drunk."

So, yeah, as much as I don't like fan-made games, this looks extremely well done, and faithful to the original Mother series.

I'm impressed, actually. This looks kinda fun.

Probably won't make me cry like Mother 3 did, though.

I hope this isn't going to be just a shitty game with Mother-like graphics and battle system. To be honest I doubt it will be any good.

I hope it's as good as the original.
If not, then prepare for nerd rage the likes of which you have never seen.

No, because the Mother fanbase is not full of retards. If it's not as good a game as Mother 3, but still a good game, there will be no raging. And even if it's a bad game, the fans will probably go "meh, whatever" and move on.

Why can't fans of anything be like that?

Looks interesting. I heard about it a while ago.

I doubt it will be as good as Mother 3, though. Mostly because almost nothing is as good as Mother 3.

It will probably be better than Earthbound, though. Most things are.

Earthbound is awesome :colbert:

Parts of it are awesome. Like the final battle, for example. I just don't think it has aged very well. The dialog, characters, and story are just... bland.

Anyway, I understand that we have different opinions and respect yours and blah blah blah let's not turn this into a flame war.

mother fans are very, very devoted. i've been following this for a while now, it looks great.

and also, zink, earthbound is a very deep game, especially the last boss. there's lots of symbolism, emotion, etc. etc. etc., but a lot less "personal" than mother 3. still, the earthbound series is very dark.

I learned of this development a few months ago, and it still hasn't lost my interest. The development as of so far seems quite promising, especially with their announcement of switching from a Gamemaker to C++ engine. While it's still rather frustrating that so few details are available, I applaud them for being able to keep it as discrete as possible while still garnering such a great amount of attention. Not to mention, the website's layout is great, especially for a fangame.

A friend of mine isn't nearly as faithful about it. Ever since he played his first fangame, he's been biased against all of them regardless of the title and related series. I couldn't blame him for a few of them, but this one stands high above most I've encountered.

also, i'm loving the fourside styled buildings in the first one

Yeah, I knew about this one. It certainly has promise, but... that's not really saying much. It's far too hard to actually tell how good it's gonna turn out from a couple of screenshots.

This. Most prominently, it's whole surrealism element, which was a big part of why it was so popular when it first came out. It's just old-hat now.

Ehh... I don't see that really making any sort of a difference. The only big downside to Gamemaker, as long as we're talking about regular OOP games here, is that it lags on bigger ones. And the Mother series is certainly not one of them.

I never finished Mother 3 but I liked it, so I hope this is good too. One of the best things I liked about Mother 3 was the dialogue, so I hope this is just as good too (although I doubt it). Could they get sued for this? Or is it not similar enough (despite having the same title apart from the number).
