I think once Lucas was put in a Smash Bros. game, Iwata realized that Nintendo needs more original franchises. Oh well, better late than never.

Lucas may have starred in the most recent game, but Olimar starred in the most recent franchise.

You saying this also leads me to believe that what ever game this is, it will be featured in the next Super Smash Bros., which won't begin development until some time after this game I'd wager.

Yeah, there's definitely going to be another Super Smash Bros. game. It's not like Sakurai hates sequels are anything.

Plus, with the exception of amazing polishing, Brawl didn't really add much to the franchise that Melee didn't have. Notice the difference between the original and Melee. Now notice the difference between Melee and Brawl.

Long story short, I think Brawl is the series' peak. The only reason they will make another is if they suddenly get a ton of ideas of new characters. And that's probably never going to happen.

Sakurai DID say he had other ideas he wanted to add in SSBB. In fact, he also said he had ideas for Melee which he later added in Brawl. I think it was in an IGN interview where he said this.

Well, knowing it's being worked on by Sakurai AND Nintendo? It's bound to be good. Let's hope to hear of it at E3 this year.

I highly doubt it. After all, Shigeru Miyamoto only mentioned Pikmin 3, and the reasoning why that wasn't featured at all during E3 was because, supposedly, they did not have enough media to present it.
