Usually subscription based games have a pre-paid option. You pay so-and-so amount and get a certain number of months to play instead of having to pay it every month and worry if you have enough for it then. Then again its only 7 bucks a month. Thats not expensive at all.

Wait a few months and Wakfu will be available. (The game, not the series I ramble about).

It's funded in part by revenue from the series, trading card games, comics, etc. Supposedly it'll have a larger free-to-play area than Dofus does, and the classes and game engine will be updated.
