Blah blah late to the party again
It's kind of ridiculous that Yahtzee is complaining that Super Mario Galaxy 2 is the same as Super Mario Galaxy 1. That's kind of exactly what it's trying to be. The first Super Mario Galaxy was really good, and players loved it and wanted more. Also, the first Super Mario Galaxy was really successful, and Nintendo wanted more cheddar. Sort of a win-win, if you don't think about it too hard.
Let's face it, the only people who bought SMG2 were those who got the first game, loved it, and decided another one was worth the fifty bucks. SMG2 never tried to trick customers into thinking it would be a groundbreaking sequel that would put the old game to shame. Everyone who bought the game knew exactly what they were getting in to.
I mean, I'm a supporter of the video games are art argument, but looking for artistic merit in SMG2 is like nominating Step Up 3D for the Academy Awards just to watch it lose.
As for the game, I love it. I find myself laughing while playing, not in a humorous way, but more of a "ha ha oh man this is awesome" kind of way. The second world's boss (the first Bowser level) was probably the perfect amount of challenge for me. I got through it in one try, but I was on my toes the whole time. It was really great. From then on, things just got harder and dying began to get a bit frustrating, but a little perseverance never hurt anyone. Right now I'm at eighty-something stars.
The one part of the Yahtzee review that resonated with me was "Get stun-locked down one bottomless pit, been stun-locked down them all." It's become apparent to me how erratic this game's difficulty is. Well, it's not difficulty that's wavering, per se, but how forgiving the game is. Arbitrarily, the space underneath platforms might be bottomless pit (instant death), quicksand (instant death, unless it's one of those sandstream things that will carry you away), or lava (a measly one unit of damage). Run into an enemy and you might just get hurt, or you might get knocked off and fall do your death. Get hurt while on Yoshi, and you might just fall off and have to catch him and jump back on, or he might disappear completely and you'll have to go back to a spawning point to get him. That's really my biggest problem with the game.
Oh, um,
the music is really, really good.
