Don't listen to any of these people. Do not ever, ever catch a Pokemon, that means you suck. Just use your starter and blaze a path of victory straight to the end.

And you always need another poke that isn't the same elelment as your most used one, and make sure to give all your pokes attacks that are not of the same element.

Mine usually has a variation of weaknesses, but I used to have the problem of only having one or two decent pokemon. I just powered through with my starter until I caught the legendary birds and then finished the game with those four.

Glad I don't play that way anymore. Though my current team in Diamond is pretty weak to ground...
